Well I hope 402 is the best choice right now.....cause I am getting one from Andy at A&A. Having new springs and then my AFR 205 put on. Cam will stay 220/224 if it didn't get ruined in my engine failure...or may go 224/228.
I guess if it pulls better out of the truns ...... I can remain a puss going into them. I hope to get a track day in by October.....

Ask yourself what can you afford to pop? Sooner or later they pop. Even one bad shift and it could ALL be gone. If you make something more powerful make sure you have all the coolers, it just gets worse as the HP goes up on all components. Bang for buck 402

I have been very happy with my little 417cid 6.0 iron block....
Of course in 2003, there were not so many options.
I like the idea of 5-600 easy rwhp NA

Not sure if you were responding to my post John but I am hoping temps don't get much higher at the track. I have all the coolers and Dewitts radiator. I figure the engine is bigger but shouldn't need to work as hard as my stock sized LS1 to get me around the track with same lap time.

The faster you go the more dangerous it gets and with no cage What would a 402 pull down the straight at Pocono over head cam car which hits 160-165? Build a 427 with 600+ HP I wonder what the speeds would be? Edith said she'll kill me if I add power and no full cage

My wife Kim says the same thing.
a C5Z T1 or moded C5 coupe like John's and mine do 145-150 mph ( redline 4th gear on VIRs back straight. C6Zs do 15 - 20 mph faster with out trying. that's 165-170 mph and no cage
IMHO when one starts getting above 400 hp a cage, fire suppression and other safty items are must have items.
At this point is when TWO cars, one for the street and a race car are very good ideas.

I have come to realize that you cannot have a street car that you want to keep really nice and a car that you take to the track. accepting that has made my life a lot easier and last weekend when I went to a car show people asked about the track rubber on the nose and side of the car and I just smiled.....
figure my car has 460 rwhp. Currently I get into the 150s on the back straight of Pocono because I do not go all out. I know the car could hit 160s, but I know I am not ready to handle that speed if something does go wrong.
I am not replacing my engine until I need to. I hope that is some time from now, but we all know that track days are not easy on the engine so I am planning for the next upgrade so that it is not a surprise when it does happen.
And I agree with the roll-cage. I figure over the winter I will put one in.

I signed up for August 20th with PDA then I got a invite to my brother's 40th B'day party on the 19th. That means I now need to find time to set the car up for the track so I can make PDA event (I planned on doing everything Saturday including loading the car so I could leave at 4:00am sunday morning). so far its not looking good
AU N EGL - you are right we all need dedicated track cars
I can't wait to see what a new Z does on the back straight at Pocono or Doug's 447.
at WGI Doug would pull on me in the straights and he was shifting at 5800 rpms
Luckily he couldn't get through turn 9 without going 10 mph
Though next time I am in trouble since the last session he got in my car and I showed him how late I took the turn and how much speed I carried through 10 and 11.....
Yeah the 447 would be sweet, but wondering if it might be too much for road courses though Doug seems to like his a ton.
I guess it is good and bad that there are so many choices....
You might not notice much difference between Don's set-up and Doug's. If Don's car has the torque you are looking for why spend the extra money. Either way you will be happy.

very good point which is one reason the 383 came into the mix. I do know I dont want the compression that Don is running for a track car. The money I saved would be used up with having to use race gas

I run a 383 LS1 through a completely stock ls1 TB making 486rwhp/458tq. Once I get a 90/90 setup it should be well over 500 rw. It was half the cost of most 402 builds which enabled me to get the clutch system and fuel system upgrades as well. IMO I don't think this little 383 is doing too bad considering it's making almost the same power as the 402 guys. In addition, it's also 100 lbs lighter than a 402 setup.
