Ok, I am trying to install a honker and am stuck. Need some assistance if possible. I cannot get the radiator shroud off. On step 9 the instructions state "Remove (2) metal retaining clips from plastic retainers". I have tried to remove the "clips" with no luck. Pretty hard to do when you can hardly get your hand in there to work. I have attached a pic. Can anyone help me with this? How do you get these off?
Honesty, I man-handled mine to get it off, damaging the plastic retainer. They really aren't designed to be reusable.
To make my life easier, upon re-assembly I simply used some nice Ty-Raps; they hold the shroud as well or better than those stock clips, and it's much easier to work with if you need to remove the shroud again.
The white post and retainer will come out with the shroud. When it's out you can try to save the things by prying out the stays on the retainer and slipping it off the post and straightening out the the back the plastic post that you pulled from the frame. If you can save things install the white posts before you put the shroud back in. When I did a Vararam install if I had thought about the Ty Wraps that Dan suggested eariler that is what I would have done.
They were a pain when I installed my Honker too. Just grip the metal ring with some pliers and yank it off. I was able to reuse the platic pieces and got new metal rings at the parts store. The tie wraps would've been a lot easier had I thought about that.
I man-handled mine as well. I bought new ones, put them it (major pain) and don't use the metal washers. I found the seal was out of position as well and fixed that while it was apart. Once it is mounted by in place by the screws on the bottom and the top by the shroud, I found it sealed all the way up and didn't need the metal washers and have never put them back on.
There's a couple of clips you have to get to from the underside. I don't remember where everything was right off hand, but I do know that once everything is disconnected, it comes right out with minimal fuss.
Thanks for all of the replies. Using the tips that were posted I was able to get it off. The rest of the install was pretty straightforward. Thanks again!
Use needle nose pliers to gradually wiggle them off. They may end up getting cut, but that didn't seem to adversely affect the tightness of my reinstall of the shroud.
