Default Cam Question

Comp Cam 218/224 114 LSA 563/568 Lift 3712/3715 Lope

What will this cam do for my 2000 Coupe as far as increased horsepower or torque. The only other mods I have is a "Y" style K & N air intake and after marked exhaust!

Thanks for any advice!

You will get about 40 hp from that cam. I got that with mine, VHP_056 216/224 0.551/0.551 114.5 LSA

By aftermarket exhaust, I'd assume you're running long tube headers. If not, your gains will not be as large. 35-40 rwhp gain with headers and high-flow cats and around 30 rwhp gain with stock exhaust manifolds.

IMO that cam is along the lines of a "cheater" cam which is not that big but with some good heads (i.e. AFR,TrickFlow ) and good flowing exhaust should show some decent gains in horses and awesome torque. Welcome Patrick!

If I get this cam for $170 do I need to do anything else to my motor other than adding the cam to make sure it runs correctly? I just added new plugs and wires a few months ago.

YES !!! You will need new valve springs !!!! I would recc comp 918's or simliar--The stock springs will deff not hold up and may even coil bind with a .563/.568---causing major engine damage--
It is possible you will need a tune to get it to idle correctly and to eliminate surging , stalling, or hanging idle--

I have this cam in my 02 MN6 Coupe. I removed a 02-04 LS6 cam to install this one. I don’t have any dyno numbers but the comp cam does pull better than the LS6 cam in the 2500-5000 range. Below that and above that it feels about the same. Idle quality is OK but not dead smooth like the stock cam. Will you be installing the cam yourself? If so be sure and measure the base circle, mine was a little smaller than the LS6 cam and that cam (LS6) was about .050 smaller than the stock LS1 cam. In other words you’re going to need some longer pushrods. Like the above poster mentioned even though this is a mild cam the stock valve springs will not put up with .563/.568 lift so be sure and add that to your list of parts. And yes you will need some tune work. I use EFI live and have spent most of the time with the idle. Be happy to answer any other questions…….

Thanks so much for the advice, didn't realize it was that indepth! How much are new springs and anything else I would need to add so I don't damage my engine. I thought I could just add the cam and be good to go! Thank goodness for you guys on the forum for steering me in the right direction. I would love to add the cam just curious how much more money will need to invest to get the car to run right without damage!

A dyno tune is a must. also great time for an underdrive pully

and as Patrick mentioned LTs is where the extra HP comes from, not exhaust aka mufflers

There is an interesting 3-cam test in Comp's web site, under the "magazine article section - GM articles". It compares this cam to a couple of others. I think it's called "3 lS1 cam comparo" or something like that.

Absolutely, you will need springs and a tune. When I installed my cam, I saw only 4 HP. Afte the tune I got another 20.
