In my previous FRC it had the stock shifter and I could bang the gears racing without a problem. This new FRC I have has the hurst shifter and no matter how hard I try I miss 3rd damn near every time when I try to power shift. Its just way to notchy, not sure what the deal is.
I have a c6 z06 shifter Im thinking about installing but has anyone made the switch and have any comments on the differences? I just can't race this car like I want to with this Hurst. Everything is installed properly and drives flawless when spirit driving without power shifting, but the min I try to bang 3rd NOPE VROOOOOM! Ideas, questions, concerns? I know the little key or whatever that piece is, is not there.
Ok I took a deep breath and Im better now, but I'd still like some suggestions.
Have you ever changed out the springs on the Hurst? I had the problem you speak of with the 4-5 shift, but i put soft springs on one side and the problems eliminated.
Then, the noise of the Hurst drove me nuts after the header install, so i got the isolated B&M and will never go back.
Although I don't have alot of seat time in my "new-to-me" C5. It has a C6 shifter and operates very smooth. Also has shorter throws than the stock C5 shifter.
I have a KIRBAN and it too has centering springs. I LOVE mine and it actually Aids me in shifting properly. I use to miss fourth but now I'm 100% in all gears. What shifting hand technique do you use??
I find that some people try to monkey fist the shifter and during the heat of the moment and rush of adrenalin the shift gets botched.
If your shifter has centering springs, use the palm of your hand to push the shifter out of second (it should pop into the neutral 3-4 gate) and continue to push it with the palm of your hand into third. If your shifter is working correctly, you should NEVER miss that shift.

Let me know what you think.

Many "old timers" are familiar with the hammer fisted solid click-click of HURST shifters on a MUNCIE four speed with external linkage.
The internal rail linkage T56/TREMEC won't allow for that. It takes practice, but the palm of the hand and finger tips (Ranger) method does work.
I had the Hurst for two weeks and took it out. I hated it. I now have the C6 shifter (not sure what the difference is between the C6 and C6Z06 shifters) but I really like what I have now.
In the video below the upshifting from second to third is a 0.32sc HPTuner recorded from didengagement to full engagement.
I have never miss any shift with this shifter, very precise and predictable.

Nice video, if I slow my shifts down to that speed I can hit the gears fine but at the strip i'm used to not even lifting and that seems impossible with this hurst. Im going to give the C6 Z06 shifter a try and see what happens.
I have the Hurst and when I was learning to drag race I missed 3rd 15 times, don't laugh. I finally figured out my problem and now I have no problem hitting 3rd. In fact it is now my quickest shift. I had one of the looser springs in the shifter and when I went to powershift into 3rd the spring wouldn't pull it to center in time and I was hitting inbetween 1st and 3rd. All I did was place my palm off center(center of palm a little to the left) and that helped me put it right in gear by forcing me to go up and slightly over with the shifter. I was thinking of going to the c6z because of missed shifts but it was bad technique that was the problem all along.

Hi Blu,
How long is your upshifting time from second to third gear from disengagement to full engagement at the drag strip?

I don't have a datalogger to time it but I used to not lift off the throttle when shifting. I know its not good for the tranny or drivetrain but I always go ***** out at the drag strip and I just can't do it with this hurst.
I really like my hurst shifter after doing the washer mod. Not as notchy and if you push it forward, the 2nd to 3rd shift falls into place. It is made not to miss the shift. I used to force it and miss the shift. Sorry to hear about problems.

The Hurst with a properly shimmed detent ball - priceless.
Although to the OP's point - I don't shift like that, can't afford the potential repair bills.
I had the Hurst in my car for about 2 months and really liked the shifter when cruising, but I hated it when it came time to rip on it. I even had the lightest spring loads in it. I switched to the C6ZO6 shifter as well and will keep that shifter for as long as I own the car. Its a great shifter both for spirited driving and for aggressive shifting.
I have a Hurst and like it a lot. I have zero issues banging though the gears. I think the hardest shift is the 4-5. Trust the shifters centering springs for the 2-3 shift and just pull with your finger tips for the 3-4 shift. If you keep the strength of your thumb off the handle and quit fighting what the shifter is designed to do it shifts great.
