This cam could be repaired with some slight less lift on that damaged lobe Without even welding, just a slight grind to clean the damage
but
Call comp cams....
This might be salvageable, or they might help you out and give you a new one since they know about these batches..
It wouldnt hurt to give it a try..
I wouldn't recommend repairing it. I just got done replacing a BBC Roller camshaft that I had repaired. I was fighting a problem for three years that turned out to be the camshaft that was repaired. Once the new camshaft was installed everything is now back to normal. Supposedly the way a camshaft is repaired can effect valve train harmonics.
Well he has ignored my PM's and phone calls since last thursday... Even though I gave him till tomorrow (friday the 14th) to return my money (he said he didnt get paid till this week) do you guys think its time i start bringing this public over on ls1 tech and their texas chapter page as well? he HAS logged into ls1tech (ive been watching his last activity updates everytime i log in) Ive even PMed him while he was online several times. He hasnt gotten on AIM, or YAHOO or Called me back ( i think he's screening my calls) I left a voicemail on his mothers cell phone (the number he gave me) and ive already verified the address and phone numbers he gave me were valid. so what do you guys think?
I've gotten many good deals on this forum. Im young at 22 but i just am weary of the people over on ls1tech for some reason
corvette forum rocks totally
LS1tech is mostly the younger crowd, yes, but I have done a few private buys from there, and all went well. I've done probably 100 deals on this forum, and so far, no problems either.
As with any classified ad, there are good and bad deals out there. The medium it's posted in doesn't much matter.
At least LS1tech has a trader rating system. That would be a very welcome addition to this site.
He is a younger guy (20) so we have a re-payment schedule worked out where he gives me no-less than $100 dollars tomorrow, the 31st and the 15th of April. I am doing my best to be understanding of his financial constraints. I like to think it is good karma. I could have been a real you know what about it and demanded all my money back at once and told him that his finances are none of my concern.
this is why you dont buy a used cam....to save 100 bucks for the hearbeat of an engine???????????? i dont get it....a cam is typically the lowest cost item in a car- compared to rockers, intake, heads.....why risk it....buy new
I agree with the others get your money back, but cams can be reground and turn out just fine. No loss of lift or anything. The base circle has to be smaller, but as long as it's not removing to much heat treat it will work fine.
Without a hardness test you won't know if it was poor heat treat or something else going on. Possibly bad lifters, light on the springs, agressive lobes, oil contamination, etc, etc. I had my old comp cam reground for a friend and went from a 232 236 .575" .578" XE lobe to a 228 232 .588" .595" XER lobe. There are limits to what thay can change (Comp wouldn't move the LSA or ICL around), but it worked out well in the end. Cam looked like new when I got it back from Comp. Lifters looked good when the heads were pulled for a swap after 5K of abuse.
Don't get me wrong you should get your money back, but just pointing out to the others that a regrind can work out well.
.Some newbie might put a used cam in like this and not even ask any knowledgeable person about the damage.$3000 later, after a rebuild, the guy is counting his change for a year.Anyone who brings a used cam to my shop will be running to catch it as I throw it out the door.

There is no problem in re-using a cam, if it's not damaged. This one clearly IS damaged, and that isn't the buyer's fault.
Based on the pics, this localized pitting is the likely result of inadequate heat treating, and anyone who reads over at LS1Tech knows this isn't all that rare of occurance. Both Comp and Cam Motion/Futral have had their fair share of "bad batches" of cams.
As for the peace of mind of buying new....you could buy a brand new cam, and pull it out of your car 5k miles later looking just like this.
Or, you could buy a used cam that's already been run for 5k miles, and still looks like new. Given that comparison, I'd be more apt to trust the used one that's proven to work.
