Default Cam Damage---need Advice Asap

Well i just got my used g5-x2 cam in the mail. it was packaged pretty well, and all but one of the lobes looks to have the normal wear (no divets or any such shenannigans). Here is the lobe in question. The pictures the seller sent me didnt picture this and i dont know how severe it is. Can this cam be installed in my ls1 without issue?

It came out of a 99' camaro and had approx 5,000 miles on it. hes going with a G5-X4 and other big power mods is why he said he was selling it. thanks for fast responses guys.

also keep in mind that the all other lobes look good and are smooth to the touch just that guy and a small bit of the one next to it have any roughness at all. anything else you see is just debris that will be cleaned off.

NO! Get your money back! That damage will propagate and cause the roller on the lifter to do the same thing. Once that happens, it will only get worse. There have been a few LS1 guys with the same damage and it was found cause the valve train was making strange noises. I wouldn't put that one in my engine!!

I'm sure others will chime in soon! Hopefully with the same consensus.

I sent him a private message and explained the situation. he said it came out of a running car and that he didnt understand. I told him to check his lifters and such before he installs his g5x4. I made sure to be very courtieous with him. Hopefully this transaction will go smoothly as he has a 100% positive trader rating with 15+ transactions under his belt. (ls1tech)

Yeah, how long ago? Looks like it sat around in his garage without any oil on it. Probably corroded. Completely unacceptable. Ask for your money back. I mean, give me a break, it had to look that way before he shipped it to you.

as others have said. You don't want to install that cam. Get a refund. A cam in that condition should never have been sold as is. Good luck.

Why the heck would anyone buy a component that takes so much effort and $$ to install, buy used? Is the cost savings that great?

I would never buy a used cam.

Many members have purchased used cams and had favorable experiences. most cam companies are charging 50-100 dollars more for their custom grind cams which all usually come from comp cams. the avg used cam goes for $250 whereas new from LG for example they are $450 new. 200 dollars is substantial savings to me.

I had a Comp Cam have pits like that out of the box and they replaced it. The pits were not isolated to one lobe. The tech said that he didn't think it would cause any problems but didn't fight me on replacing it. Get your money back. He should have disclosed the true condition.

Sounds like his problem not your's. Anyone making mods to thier car to that extreme such as a cam swap, has got to have a little money ($250) in the bank from week to week.

now he is trying to get me to claim it at the postal office as damaged in shipping. he swears up and down that it was fine when he shipped it. but i fail to see how that type of scoring could have occured even from dropping it.

That is clearly a casting or wear issue and not shipping.

Tiki... I told you not to do this on an ultra tight budget bro... **** like this happens. That cam is junk, there's no way it'd be going in my motor.

Get your money back... he needs to refund you even if it means a cash advance and deal with the post office or whomever on the back end.

You need to call LGM and buy the cam new... and get going.

My $0.02 buying critical engine parts used isn't worth the cost savings.
