It's normal. My car had quite a bit more valvetrain noise after my cam/spring swap.

Cams that are described as having “aggressive ramp rates” will make more noise on valve closing compared to a stock cam. That being said, did you check to make sure your new springs are not going into coil bind with the new cam?

Did you measure for pushrod length?

You really should measure for pushrods. Most just put in the 7.400" without measuring, but each car is different. The lifters are fairly forgiving and you may get away with it, but best to measure and be sure of the length required.

When I changed mine, the smaller base circle of the larger cam required a slightly longer pushrod at 7.425.

I finally got to drive mine today after doing H/C late last fall. It is damn noisy and I spent hours setting up the valve train and measuring.

When I did the original H/C package for my 346, the valve train got noticeably louder, and yes, I did measure for the correct length pushrods and check for coil bind. Finally went to Yella Terra ultralight roller rockers and things quieted down a bunch. I'm now running the Yella's in my LS3 stroker with a much bigger cam and the valve train is pretty quiet. Actually quieter than my 346 was with the YT's.

Do you happen to know what lobes the cams were (XE-R, etc.)?

Both cams are XE-R lobes! My friend Pete who spec'd both my combo's uses nothing but XE-R lobes.

I installed EG's Whiplash Cam and installed the recommended 7.40 push rods. Very pleased with the performance and NO NOISE.

Well,,there will always be some noise with a cam as aggressive as the one I'm running but, with respect to the 610 lift, the valve train is very quiet!!!
