So after having my Vararam VR-b2 in for a year and pretty much done with all the dirt it likes to trap I am thinking of changing to another intake system.
Its a loaded question I know but if you could do a top 3 list which one would you guys do.
1. Callaway Honker
2. Halltech Venom II with opened up fog light panels or my CAI mod that includes a cold air scoop.
3. Blackwing with the same mods as #2.

Those would be good options
I duct tape my screens closed for better aero at high speeds

Did you have the fog light screens installed?
Just curious, how quickly the filter require cleaning...

Yes fog light insert, I do it every oil change or if I do a lot of highway driving every 2K miles then.
You will find a lot of dirt comes through, I have found dirt under my manifold...No I do not 4X4 the Vette lol.
As a Tuner i've worked with them all--I had a Granatelli twin flow --After working with a newly installed Vortex Rammer on a customer's car and tuning it--I ended up swapping my the twin flo for the Rammer--Go to their site and read the write up I sent them http://www.breathlessperformance.com/testimonialC5.asp
PS : NO CODES or idle issues commonly found with the Varraram !!!

thanks it looks good ill research it some more also, since i have the fog lights flowing through already it looks like a good way to use with what i already have. And you said no idle issues, been fighting those ever since i got that thing installed. My tuner finally got it under control but it took him a while...

Ok, this may be a dumb question but the air that packs in the area ahead of the radiator is meant to flow thru the radiator. If now we start pulling air for the engine from that same area is there less air passing thru the radiator now or is there an over abundance of air packing in there that it doesn't matter?
There was a test done by a top fuel funny car crew chief a couple years or so ago (on a different forum) between the vararam and the rammer on the C6. His findings were that the Vararam flowed much more air than the Rammer, but then again, that was on the C6 so may be different on the C5.
But then again mine is a front not a bottom breather
No prob but I have a bigger tranny cooler (A4 11X11X1.5) set up along with a pusher fan on top, in front of the A/C condenser, so that would not be an option. 100*+ weather here on a daily during the summer... Unless I rip the whole plastic off let the air run through the whole engine bay but then I would have to get an extractor hood set up too....man this is getting expensive
Seal the filter into the housing and you won't get any dirt part the filter. I recommend just RTV'ing it in there since I couldn't find any gasketing that would stick well enough to suit me.
It amazes me that Vararam keeps selling these things built so that when you put the filter into the housing there are quite visible air gaps between the gasket and the filter, like about 1/8" or so on each long side of the filter. It would be nice if they could actually build them right, like use a different filter that could seal or get a 1-piece custom rubber gasket made that will seal to the filter.

That's why I returned my Vararam and purchased the Callaway Honker
