People use turn downs because there have been instances where the exhaust melted the leaf spring.
Never thought of that but I was just making a general statement on the exhaust no matter where it was at. From what I have heard when you have the exhaust exit down to the ground versus parallel to the ground it will muffle the sound a little bit so it wont be at loud.

I went with the muffler bypass pipe welded in. The mufflers are still there but the 2-3" bypass pipe sends most of the exhaust straight out the back and not thru the mufflers. When stock, I got the comment about it sounding like a motorboat. With cam it sounds mean and at full throttle it sounds like a dragster. IMO of course. If you have or know someone with averaging welding skills, this could be a cheap and quick way to see if you like the sound or not.
Jay
i didnt lose any low end power after putting longtubes/off road x pipe on my car with straight pipes. if anything i gained a little. my 60' wasnt slower, and i have 2.73 gears with my auto. thats as low as low end goes right there. if youre a 6spd guy, youre not gonna be launching below 3500rpm anyway. its definatelty loud. ill get some soundclips up
I have been running NO mufflers for years and just LOVE it !!! To me the sound is awesome--I'm so sick of that low rumble flowmaster type sound--My car sounds more like a race car and has a rashpier note--
I have LT headers----STOCK cats AND an X-Pipe---
I tried aftermarket hi-flow cats it it was too annoying went back to the stock cats----The X Pipe also quiets it down ---Plus I have custom 3" exhaust pipes from the cats straight back to the tips--no curve--
Around town it's not bad even with a stall converter---as long as you don't get on it too hard--But when flooring it-- it comes alive and sounds so cool--It will pop back sometimes on a hard accelerating when holding it in 1st or 2nd gear and de-cellerating to a stop---But again i think that makes it sound awesome too-Not too many people expect to see a C5 sounding like a muscle car of the 60's-and i get thumbs up all the time !!!
I run Borla straight pipes on a 99'vert with stock system and a 04Z with long tubes,x-pipe. I love it. I don't know if Borlas pipes are tuned in anyway if not the muffler shop pipes should sound fairly the same. On the other hand Borla straights are cheap I think Corvette Garage sells them for $380 with a nice polished tips. What is the shop charging?
just wear your ear plugs, forget your cell phone or the stereo, you wont hear either.
Conversation with passenger? not a chance
I don't mean to sound elitist, but this setup is very crude looking. I can only imagine how it sounds. My own setup has HF cats, and full mufflers (Corsa Pace Car) and is REALLY LOUD! The people with variations of straight pipes must be able to tolerate incredible sound levels, and attendent cabin resonance.
Same here. I am old school, there's nothing better than the nasty, raw sound like you would expect from your average muscle car.
Dope
Yea I like the old school muscle even though I am part of the "ricer" generation(cant stand those hondas). But if and when I get long tubes I am going to at least try it without mufflers, but if that doesnt work then Ill just slap on the pair of Ti's I have sitting in the garage or the powerflow's.
It'll be hard to judge the sound from videos like this... Have you been around corvettes with other mods?
When I bought my 02 it was stock with the exception of straight pipes out the back. With the factory exhaust manifold and cats running through straight pipes I'd say the volume was comparable to long tubes with mufflers and no cats.

I actually feel that with my exhaust it is a fairly good representation of the sound in the car, just a little louder. But it still represents it a lot better than I ever expected.
