you said that you want it loud, so I won't assume that you are not relating power gains or losses to the mod.
Well, if you want loud, remove the mufflers. PERIOD!
I have Borla straight pipes and everything else is stock. It produced 131db at the Corvette Funfest and won me $50, yippie for me
At idle it rumbles a lil bit and cruising it is very mild, as long as I'm not running it hard it isn't really too loud. In fact, I am going to remove the cats to free up a few ponies and help the engine run a lil cooler being that the noise isn't that loud currently, of course it will be much louder after the cats are gone. (note, if anyone wants to give their opinion about the more ponies and cooler comment, please do it on a thread that addresses that subject, this is about mufflers and I'm only stating my own personal thoughts, thanks).
I run without mufflers, I lose a little low end torque because of it but gain that little back on top end. And the lose/gain is minimal. But I love how mine sounds with out mufflers. Just about every Friend I have with a Vette runs TI's and well for me it sounds raspy and scratchy. They sound good but they dont have the overwhelming god rumble of H/C and no mufflers.
Virginia is really bad about noise violations, but I have yet to have a cop stop me because of how loud my car is.
Just get an exhaust like B&B Bullets or Borla Stingers that don't have mufflers but just have resonators. It'll be PLENTY loud but will still sound good.

I also live in Virginia and have never been pulled over but I know several people who have but I think its cause of the way their car sounds(hondas).
Anyways I have SLP Loudmouth 1's and as long as you dont stay at ~2,000 rpm you should be fine with drone. I also barely notice the noise at cruise with the windows down.
Oh and for me it feels like the top end gained a whole lot more than expected considering how the tires spin going into second now
I run without mufflers, well actually, my STS kit does not allow the use of mufflers....
Car sounds great and I get many compliments but local law enforcement don't care too much for it!
I just recieved a ticket last month for speeding, the officer said I was going 60+. I asked, "So how fast, EXACTLY, was I going? His response was that he did not pace me nor get a radar but by the sound of my car, I had to be going at least 60mph.
So, my next court date is Nov 15th, wish me luck!!!!
The best part of no mufflers are underpasses and tunnels, sounds like NASCAR!!!

Have fun, but be prepared.....
The Turbos on your car themselves muffle the sound really good for a very unique sound.
I by-passed the mufflers on my 98 Coupe for a couple of months. It a unique sound but, with out some chambering from a muffler system, the C5 exhaust note is very guttural and crude. Lots of poppig and Drone. Due to the unique LS firing order, it doesn't sound like old school muscle.
YES,,,,,,,, there is LOTS of annoying cabin resonance. It gets old fast. If you have a manual tranny, you can shift around the DONE ZONE but if you have an A6, it sucks BAD.
It was fun for a few months and I just found a set of Ti's and installed them. Worked great!
I traded my borla touring for some borla straight pipes. extremely loud and the drone was a killer in the cab. I found a company online who sell inserts/baffles into your h-pipe or x-pipe before hooking up catback. They sell these for race cars to reduce sound levels on tracks. Cut down on the sound level and reduced the drone level enough for my wife to ride again.
I ran my 97 for a couple of years with no mufflers. It is loud and you will get some back firing and flames out the back every now and then if you are running hard and upshifting or downshifting. On the highway it will drone like hell. 1600 to 1800 rpm is a killer when the throttle opens as you start to go up a hill. Parts inside the cabin that didn't vibrate before the change vibrated afterward and when I put the stock mufflers back on they stopped vibrating. Forget about hearing your passenger talk to you or hearing the radio. Its like living inside a drum.
Get some Z06 mufflers preferrably off from a car that has been tracked extensively on a road course. The mufflers are fairly loud when the car is being run hard. At idle they will not sound loud and noise inside the cabin is bearable but when you are in gear with the throttle wide open and rpms over 4K they will roar and the people you go by will definitely hear the roar. Don't know why but ones off from a car that has been tracked make more noise. The techs at the dealership where I used to take my 03Z always asked what I did to get the car louder than the other Zs they worked on. You can tell the mufflers that are off from tracked cars because their exhaust tips have turned blue.
