Has anyone heard of a class action suit going on now on the early c5's with this problem.
My car has it on startup. I've had the car for 9 years and it has never changed. And it goes away after it is warmed up. I don't worry about it because I know what it is. But I am trying to sell the car and it is hard to explain to someone that doesn't know. I tell them to just read what is on the internet. If you are buying this type of car anyway you should do your homework.

What problem? A noise doesn't always mean there is a problem. So far I have not heard of anybody showing there is a problem. No problem no class action suit or any suit at all. Does your car have any issues with excessive oil consumption, does it have reduced power, are you experiencing increased maintenance costs?? Machines make noise some machines make different noises than others. Once I found out it wasn't an issue after I took delivery of my 97 I never worried about it. Had two C5s over a period of 12 years and both of them had piston slap or whatever was causing the noise. By definition a quality problem only exists if a product can't perform as intended. Since the noise doesn't hinder the engine from performing in its intended manner it isn't even a quality issue.
The reason I am asking is that a potential buyer of my car asked a chevy tech friend of his if the slap was a problem. The guy said that the 99's were the worst. I told him to do a search on it. I think he is going to use this to drive the price down. At the price I am selling it at it isn't going down much.
Mine has a slight sound for 2 minutes or so. When warmed up it makes no noise. Been that way for 12 years. I used to worry a little after going supercharged but I just let it warm up before boost. Hey Matt is your ride back together? Didn't see a post on it. Rod

I can easily state that my '99 has been a great car. No piston slap ever with it and now at 326k miles. Bottom end has not been apart yet.
Heavier oil will do next to nothing to quiet down piston slap, as you have seen.
There is no pressurized lubrication, at the base of the pistons, where the slapping occurs. The only lubrication in that area, is just a very small amount of oil splash.
