Default C5 Powertrain Removal

Alright so im going to be removing the powertrain from my 2000 c5 6 speed coupe here soon and im looking to get some advice/tips. Im a shade tree mechanic, ive pulled motors and several transmissions in the past, but this will be my first time doing it with a vette. The plan right now is to use 2x12x12 under each of the four jack stands to raise it high enough to pull everything out. I plan to drop the rear cradle/torque tube first, and then the motor so i dont have to worry about trying to get the motor off of the shaft on the tt. If this is not the best way let me know! Not to be an *** but if you havent done this job before im not really looking for your input.

I know my mechanic does it on a lift with a couple trans jacks....its like only 8 bolts to drop the whole thing......I dunno about doing it yourself though

there are a few here who have done it so hopefully they chime in

I will be doing the same, minus the lift lol i have 4 pretty tall harbor freight jackstands, a trans jack and a low profile jack, and several smaller jackstands for precaution. Ive done several clutches on jackstands and never had any major issues. Im pretty confident i can do it, i just want to go about it the easiest way possible.

If doing it on the ground, I'd start with jackstands under the crossmembers. Then disconnect the 4 crossmember bolts, drop the exhaust, remove the tunnel plate, then start disconnecting all the little stuff...parking brake cables, all wires you can see, coolant hoses (probably best to just pull the radiator to give you more room).

Once you've got everything disconnected, start jacking the body up on one side. Raise it a bit, put jack stands under, and move to the other side. Keep going side to side until you have it raised as much as you want.

I did it on a lift, but I could see it being possible on the ground. It's WAY easier to work on the powertrain with it in tact separated from the body.

I would drop the rear subframe supporting the trans/diff etc with a transmission jack. I then unbolt the torque tube from the bellhousing to drop the torque tube, trans, and diff. You can then pull the motor from the top.

If you are putting the car back on the road, keep and eye on the torque tube and shifter box clearing the lines in the trans tunnel. Go slow and keep an eye out for any snags on wires, lines etc.

Guys have dropped both subframes, engine to diff at once, I would only do it on a left. We use large stands in the 4 puck locations and another under the engine. I highly recommend doing it with another person especially the first time.

I did everything in stages as needed. You get the car up high enough to remove the exhaust and cover plate. Then lower the drive-line. Then raise the body more. I used small jack-stands for the drive-line and larger ones for the body.

I believe this is the approach im going to take. Did you also use a trans jack to drop the front cradle?Edit: nvm i now see that you did. 👍🏼

The engine wiring harness is a little tedious but fairly straight forward.

If it is a higher mileage Vette I would definitely replace torque tube bearings and couplings.

To get the front bumper that high I put wood under the front jack stands and lowered the rear a few notches.
