I have a 2004 corvette i was having problems with the active handling witch i have been told is common. I removed THE ECBM module and sent it out to be repaired the people i set it to said they did find the problem and repaired it. I reinstalled the module and started driving the car. It takes between 10 to 20 miles for the problems to start. What happens is the active handling engages momentarily making the brakes shutter slightly. after this happens a few times the dash lights up and says service active handling and service vehicle soon and the service light stays on. I have cleared the codes at least 3 times and drove the car until the same thing happens again witch it does every time like clock work. The code i get is 28TCS
C1287
I also constantly have code 99 HVAC Be0361 Witch i think is something with the air conditioner witch works fine. I did look up C1287 code and it says it is the Steering wheel position sensor. Does this sounds like changing the sensor will solve the problem with the active handling ?
If you have an 01+ Corvette you can still get the SWPS, if you have a 97-00 you can only get a used one. Some vendors will sell the used SWPS which has been centered and others you have no idea of where the wheel was aimed when it was removed. The only way of have it centered, that I know of, is using a Tech2.
My ebcm and steering sensor went out almost exactly at the same time. Sensor replacement was about $700 at a shop. Wasn’t cheap. But sure is nice not to have the car suddenly jerk while driving.
When that sensor goes bad, it "erroneously" tells the EBTCM that you have steering input applied LEFT or RIGHT but the yaw sensor accelerometer is providing signals to the EBTCM that the car is still going straight.
The EBTCM is trying to apply brake inputs to get the car going in the direction that it THINKS you are inputting (due to the false SWPS signals)
Until you get that sensor fixed, it will not improve and may get worse!
When the SWPS signals get sporadic enough the EBTCM errors out and sets that DTC.
Disconnect the SWPS until you get a chance to replace it. That will allow you to continue using cruse control and prevent the sudden wheel jerks. while going straight down the road. Connector is on the steering column down at the floor board.
This effectively turns off Active handling but leaves traction control active.

One of the key things to check is the wheel alignment. If the steering wheel is off to one side or the other when drivingvthis code can be triggered.
I did have the car aligned and the steering column appears to be centered and it seems to be driving straight down the road with the wheel
in the centered position
Thanks BigGun
I'm Going to go ahead and pick up a sensor I've been checking around locally for a mechanic to replace it but when they say things like well we can figure that out there not a guy I want to use. does anyone have a suggestion for a good mechanic in Western mass. I'm getting a little old to be crawling around pulling out steering columns but I will do it myself if I have to.
I have seen the sensor online in several places most claiming to be genuine GM parts with a very wide price range does anyone have a parts dealer that they're very comfortable with that you could recommend.
thanks everybody I would be totally lost without your help.
bought mine on amazon from ac delco I will install it as soon as I get my car back. It is the original part. I have a 2002, here is the link to the one that fits my car:

Replacing the SWPS is not that difficult, it is important you keep the wheel straight, attached is a "How to" that I copied from the forum on replacing mine.
