Default Found a chunk of metal during diff service

I’m looking for help identifying this small chunk I found stuck on the magnetic drain plug. Just this one piece was all I found. There is a super loud whining noise above 30mph also. It’s a DTE Stage 4, 3.90. Doesn’t seem to affect drivability. Thanks.

Looks like a piece of a tooth from the ring gear? Are those fine shavings on the magnet as well?

I believe them to be fine shavings as well.

I'm just shooting from the hip here but that looks like a piece of clutch material from the differential itself.

That was my first thought as well. I think every C5 has broken Belleville washers.

Thanks guys. What worries me is that there is a very high pitched whine that’s been getting louder. That’s the whole reason why I did the diff service. To assure I used the proper Redline gear oil and proper amount (1 extra ounce) of additive as per the DTE instructions. I was really hoping the noise would go away but it’s still there. You recommend I add some more additive?

Why do you think that? I hope this is not just another 'anomaly' I have to worry about in my M6 C5.

I would think it is time to open it up and find out what else is worn out
The other metal on the drain plug could also be from the plates inside clutch packs since the washers look to be broken

It's a known common problem for C5's. Like dim HVAC displays, bad grounds, broken sun visors, etc. Get the C6 washers and clutches.

So no #SENDIT replies. LMAO. Trying to keep a good positive attitude here LOL. Being that DTE is no longer in business, what do you guys recommend regarding having it rebuilt back to DTE Stage4 specs?

Here is a relevant topic on this forum... https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1602567233
Inside that topic also is discussion about the method to determine whether or not your diff's springs are still good. It's super easy to do: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1602029052

Not sure what DTE's specs were but here is the stuff you need to upgrade to the C6 stuff

It is NOT a belleville washer. They are thin metal. This is thicker and almost looks like pot metal.

Thanks, but not being a C5 mechanic or a mechanic at all (was years ago when cars were simpler), all this is just noise to me. I have sorted out many of the anomalies in the C5 that are not mechanical. The ones that are go to my Go-To-Vette Mechanic for resolution. So far my 04 Vert has not been overly detrimental to my pocket book.

Also, I have a dumb question. Isn't the differential carrier somewhat sealed up when it's assembled? Could a piece of Belleville or clutch pack make it out of the carrier into the differential case and make it to the drain plug? Does that makes sense?

Bear with me, I've never had a C5 rear diff apart before.
