I like the west:
I know two officers who regularly write 100mph+ tickets. I don't know at what speed it becomes reckless driving, but it's more than that.
I'm sure what the OP really wanted to hear was, "Change your driving habits!" Let's be honest, in these cars they cruise effortlessly and down in Florida, nobody is going the speed limit. On average in a 55, traffic is flowing at around 70 mph, especially in South Florida. Doing 80 is not crazy. It is in other areas, but not there.
Toyota Prius are frequent fliers at this speed on my to work route. Go figure.
I understand why you would say that, but this is a highway. The normal flow of traffic is definitely not even close to 55. The average speed is more like 65-70, and that's probably a low estimate.
I should note a lesson was definitely learned, and I will be driving much slower going forward.
So you were going about 10+ mph more than the flow of traffic. That will get you a ticket every time. In CO, 25mph will result in reckless driving charge. http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/laws.html
Unfortunately people may be driving 10-15 mph over, but that doesn't make it right. In today's economy a town, county, or state can rack up $$$ just picking off one at a time.
Depending on how the judge feels you might be in trouble so I would talk to a lawyer.
I got a warning in CO for doing 73 in a 60, yes in my Vette not far from where I took the picture in my avatar.
Detectors will pick up a lot but not all. They are useless against the human eye or unmarked police vehicles. I say vehicles because in a Utah county the sheriff drives an old P/U truck and does real good business since I see him every time I go thru that county. Guarantee that if the LEO sees the radar detector and you get pulled over you will get a ticket, maybe more than one.
Seems his fine could be as much as $1500 and even some jail time and IL gives you 30 days to fight/protest else you just get a court date. He contacted the lawyer on day 28th and he was able to get a court date. He thinks jail time is not likely due to this guys age and driving history. But it's going to cost him BIG time.
About a year ago I got my first one in about 10 years. For the first time in my life I tried using the cruise control and was pleasantly surprised to find that at 65 mph in 6th gear I get 28-29 mph on a flat highway with no headwind.
In Ct. (I'm retired PO from that state) If I wrote a speeding ticket, and the operator pleaded "NOT GUILTY" I was given the court date... and if I was "NOT" on duty such as my day off, or if I had taken a "Vacation Day" I would get paid 8 hr pay at Time & a Half 12 hrs pay)
Also I would go to the prosecutor, and tell him it was my day off, & I had some "personal things to do" & ASKED him if it was possible to call that case ASAP...
99% of the time I'd be out of court by 11am... I would get 12 hrs pay weather the operator was found "Guilty" or "Not Guilty"
So by fighting it in court for me it was a "Win Win" situation..
When I did issue a summons and the operator said "I'll see you in court" .....all I could see was $$$$$$$$$$
Its very rare that a LEO does not show up in court....
I really wonder how many Corvette owners track their cars? My guess would be a small percentage, so the majority of Corvette owners are either speeders or guys that by a 12 sec 190 mph top speed Corvette a radar detector and never exceed 60 mph maybe they should sell a 4 cylinder Corvette. Don't get me wrong I don't want to see anyone get killed but giving a guy grief for 80 mph on a highway? Come on! These cars will out maneuver and stop shorter at 100 mph than a big SUV will at 60.

The only advice I can give you would be if you're going to appear in court (I am assuming this is not a mail in fine) don't go without a lawyer. They know the system and how the game is played. (No, I'm not making light of this) Good Luck
I got pulled over by a HWY patrol he said I was doing 76 in a 60. I said there goes my perfect driving record and he messed with me then let me go with a warning. He did give me a ticket for not changing my address on my DL that cost me 10.00. I lucked out.
Most of the time I drive the speed limit or a bit over and I'm always getting passed by other cars doing 10-20 over including cops.
I see cops all the time blowing by me with out there lights on. I'm always spotting cops speeding and not using there blinkers.

Do as I say not as I do! At times it looks like there are different laws for them, especially when they pull into a fast food place after speeding pass you on the highway.
some parts of the New York State Thruway are 65 mph. But they MEAN "65" not "66' I got ripped a new one by a little Trooper for doing 68 .
Clif
I am normally very respectful of the young punk revenue collectors, but if one of them tried to "rip me a new one" for doing 3mph over the speed limit I think I would respectfully tell them to F OFF and take the ticket.

3 MPH over?? Speedometers are not THAT accurate and radar guns can be off.
If the LEO ripped into me for that, I would also respectfully tell him where to go!
So I got a speeding ticket this weekend. Cop said I was doing speeds "in excess of 80 mph". He never showed me on the radar or gave me an exact speed, just "in excess of". So he wrote the ticket for 80 in a 55. I can take the driving class to avoid points, but am wondering if I should try to fight it. I've always heard of hte cop doesn't show then it is dismissed. In FL you can only take the driving class to avoid points 5 times in your lifetime.
Was curious what some of you would do or if any of you have fought a ticket?
There's a "Ticket Clinic" office in Orlando. Everyone I know that used them didn't go to court, didn't get school, didn't get any points. You just have to pay the fines and court costs which is what they really want.

Exactly! I was run off the road by a cop w/o his lights on....only to catch up with a buddy of his who had an old lady pulled over. I wonder, can we write them "citizens tickets"?
