I just broke the whole back of the rear end out of my car today what a way to end the year. we fiannly have some nice weather in Dec. and this has to happn.
Any way I have a 8" square chunk of alum. busted right out of the rearend. I took off in first got a little wheel hop and bang I am dead in the water. the whole back of the rearend the pinion gear, the cover and a large peice of the rear end fell out onto the rear sway bar. Nice
12,000 mile
Help any sugestion.
I'm sorry for your troubles. I see a lot of custom work on top...what's under the hood? I would doubt you are but if you're running stock, it's definitely a warranty fix. Then, maybe it's time to see if DTE is selling the cast iron case differentials? I hope they get you up and running rapidly.
After looking at it somemore I think It may have broken the trans. output shaft? There is a particial shaft still inside of the pinion gears. Does anyone know if that is the main output shaft from the transmission? I hope not!!!

Here is a guy that posted this thread with pictures on general discussions couple of days ago. Wheel hop is indeed the culprit, a buddy I know with a procharger that blew his rear when he banged second, the dealership covered it, depends on the dealership, Good luck. Here is his thread. Goto the second page of post. The heading for the thread is "Santa wasn't good to me this x-mas"
here it is, this is my christmas present to myself.
I am in bakersfield for xmas with the family. Had my little sister with me for a ride and hit 2nd gear a bit hard I guess. I will drive another car home to vacaville tonight pick up the race rig and drive back to bakersfield tuesday and pick the wounded csex up and get it home for repairs. so 700 extra miles of driving and a few damaged parts on one helluva good time.
Be prepared to pay for the repair out of your pocket. GM guarantees the parts in the drivetrain if they are stock. FI, NOS, or CAMs usually void the drivetrain portion of the warranty. This would be the reason I installed my "twins" in the 37th month of ownership.
every other car Ive owned the default cure for wheel hop is poly bushings, just check out some forums for other cars. Better shocks help some but theres just way too much oscillation in the stock bushings
Poly bushings will not absorb shock the way rubber does, but this is also why they dont hop, rubber absorbs and rebounds shock in a high frequency that becomes wheel hop
you might notice a bit more of the road with polys but if you run decent shock, like the new Konis, they should be doing the work dampning not your bushings
I am going to call the dealer on tuesday. I am crossing my figures. I painted the General Mang. C5 a year or so ago so I hope maybee he will help me out.
good luck, but having spent my share of years as a dealership tech I can tell you if you brought your car looking like that in with those mods trying to get a blown rear end covered under warranty the service writers are going to look like this.
Even if you were best buddies with the general manager, warranty work gets paid for by GM so its out of his hands wether it gets accepted or denied, regional service reps dont take a second look at stuff like leaky headlights, but expensive drivetrain claims they scrutinize VERY closely, especially on corvettes. Sorry but I would stand on my head if you get it covered, good luck though
