The likely consequence of a loose or missing axle nut should be half-shaft failure.

See http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1544932

(Scratch that, see glass slipper's corrected URL, below)

The rear wheel can't come off due to the axle nut being loose or coming completely off. The axle shaft goes through the center of the wheel bearing hub and the axle nut holds the axle shaft to the wheel bearing hub. The wheel is attached to the flange of the wheel bearing hub. Two completely different attachment points. If you've ever seen a front wheel drive axle shaft attachment arrangement, it's the exact same thing. Technically, you wouldn't even have to remove the wheel to change the axle...it just gives you more room to work making the job easier.

Edit: Torquetube, your link doesn't work because you copied it from the post, not the URL within the post. Here's the working link:

I went to Pep Boys and got the 33mm socket (it is a snug fit) and set the tourqe wrench for 60 ftlbs and it turned about a half a turn b4 clicking set it to 118 and it turned another quarter+ (drivers side).

Pass side started at 118 it turned about 3/4 of a turn.

SO it looks like they were at ~50ftlbs no where close to 118

Anyone in Vegas is welcome to stop by

Finally got around to checking these today. I picked up the extra set of two nuts at my dealer and when measured with my caliper gage it read ~33.4 MM, took one of the nuts into a local auto parts store and neither the 33 or 34 MM were a good fit, settled on an impact deep socket 1-5/16 for the best fit.

When I checked the right side of the car my torque was set at 100 (for my lug nuts) and at that setting I got about 30 - 35 degrees of turn out of the nut before hitting the 100 lb setting. I adjusted the torque wrench to 118 and got just a touch more out of the nut. Drivers side wasn't quite as loose. I then installed the extra set of nuts I bought on top of the OEM ones and torqued those to 100 ft. lbs.

After it is all done you can barely tell there are two nuts on each axle, slipped my wheel centers back on and was good to go. I'll recheck them again in a couple of weeks, but I don't expect them to ever loosen up again.

Default Another Loose Nut

Torqued my axle nuts on my 2006 Coupe with 6000 miles on it. Drivers side was scary loose. Passenger side was okay. I'm going to go the two nut route also...

Checked mine today. Both were fine. As a note, I have a lot of rust on the axle threads (from washing the car) and this may be what is helping to keep the nut from backing out.

Did my 2007 z51 today too, same here.

Drivers side was close to good, passenger side took 30 degrees of
rotation to get it tight.

Car has 13000 miles.

Default More data

2006 Vert, base suspension, 3000 miles:

33 mm socket from AutoZone fit fine.

Driver side tight with torque wrench set to 118 lb.-ft.

Passenger side loose (calibrated hands said about 40 to 50 lb.-ft.) and about 60 degrees of rotation brought it up to 118 lb.-ft.

SO . . . check it once a week for a month, once a month for a year, and see what happens. Or maybe Gene will offer a group purchase on rear axle nuts ?

For those of you considering the double nut route, here is the part number for the axle nut. GM#10257766

There was another number on the part bag as well, but I'm not sure what it's for? ACD# 36-4135

'07 Z51, both sides were loose (about 1/5 turn) the 33MM axle socket from Autozone fit nicely, I may try the double nut suggestion,

ahh, the advantages of living in the information age, imagine if it weren't for this forum, we would all be driving with our nuts loose

Checked my 2007 Z51 (23 March 07 build). Both sides were fine. Only 2,500 miles, so I'll check again every few weeks just to make certain ...

If it only petains to Z-06's then why is it in the C-6 General?
Are these the nuts that hold the rear end cover?
Any pics of this bolt that needs to be checked for tightening?

I think it first came to light in the Z06 section. It seems to affect most (if not all) C6's. It is the large nut at the center of the rear wheels, it is on the outside end of the rear axle, just remove your rear wheel center caps and you can see it and check it for proper torque.
