Default When changing clutches....

what are the pros and cons of upgrading to the lightweight flywheel?

With 650 WHP S/C'd on and 05 Z51 what are the benefits/drawbacks?

Inquiring minds want to know....

Thanks fellas!

The light weight flywheel has a lot less inertia behind it due to less weight being spun so when you take off from a dead stop you feel the motor pull down harder than you would if you had a steel flywheel. With you having a S/C, it shouldn't be a big issue though. When I did mine, I also went to a full race Z06 tranny that also has a lot taller 1st gear in it than my old Z51 tranny did, that coupled with the big cam I have makes taking off a little tricky...

On the upside, you'll notice a big increase in how fast it revs and how fast the rpms drop between gears allowing you to shift a lot faster!

It also frees up some Horsepower that was being used to spin that heavy flywheel. But, at the dragstrip you need to rev up a little higher for the launch, to make up for the loss of stored rotational energy.

How do you plan on using your Corvette? This question should be asked before talk what flywheel to put in. If it is a daily driver, not normally used at the track then the stock flywheel might be the better choice. If you are a hard line tracking gear head, than the low inertia flywheel would be the way to go.

I put one in my Ls1. I noticed around town, the car felt more responsive as it revved a bit quicker, but I had to adjust my launch. I found that I would launch the car using a couple hundred more rpms than when I had a steel flywheel. Alternatively if I launched at lower rpm, I had to give it more throttle.

I've always been a big fan of lighter flywheels. I've got a Cro-moly one now from Monster and it made a big difference in throttle response; the car basically feels like it lost a lot more weight than the 14 lbs or so from the flywheel would lead you to believe.
Since the revs jump up faster, rev matching is a lot easier too..
