On TOP of the shock rod there should be two flats for a wrench or a HEX or a allen hole to hold the rod. Take a look. Hold the top of the rod with (what ever tool it requires) while tightening the nut.

Go to O'Riellys and get the shock absorber tool.

It made my shock change easier and reduced the cursing dramatically.

Looks like a waste of money. It doesn't take any longer to do it with the proper hex/allen tool.

you have to hold the pin top in place while undoing or tightening the nut

i tried vise grips and every wrench available without success, then I found you really need to get a socket thats made in the shape of the top of the pin.

I think it was 2 to 3 bucks from napa.

You're right if he is taking off or installing an aftermarket shock, but the stock shocks have a rectangular shaped end which makes life a lot easier when using the tool.
