Well it looks like luck was not on my side. They found metal shavings in the oil pickup tube. When they disassembled the motor they also found several bearings were shot and even worse the crank worn down. Looks like it's new engine time.
Just for the hell of it I had my tuner write me up an estimate for a 402 stroker. The price difference between a 402 or rebuilding to my current specs is about $2200. I'm considering it but I also don't want to run into problems down the road with the rest of my driveline. I upgraded my clutch a few years ago so it should be able to handle the extra power. The trans, stock MZ6/T56, could be a concern though. I have 4.10 gears, which have been making a whining sound for sometime now, so I'm hoping that doesn't eat itself too. I guess my main concern is spending all this money just to have other parts start to go next. The car isn't raced and the damage wasn't caused by abuse. Just dumb luck or ignorance on my part in regards to aftermarket parts maintenance. (should have changed the springs sooner?) Decisions decisions....

This would concern me; you have a issues with the gear set-up.
This will not last long with a high horsepower upgrade.
But, if you get it corrected, that would be assume gears for track time, not so much for street though.

You lost me on the last sentence....?
I haven't heard of a rear eating itself yet and I've been following a few people who've had a similar sound for many years and miles. Regardless, it does need to be diagnosed and corrected. I'll see if they can take a look at the rear while the car is there.
Just for my own reference, what are average prices for a 402s built, installed, and tuned?
