I wouldn't let a close friend drive mine much less a guy who I haven't seen in many years.
Unless your last name is the same as mine and you grew up in my household, the answer is no. Either of my son's can drive it.

Last week I took my car to the local school where the 5th, 6th and 7th grade kids were holding a car wash to raise money for the band. They loved the car and one of the students asked me if he could sit in it...I immediately had thoughts of letting this kid in and then the other 25 kids wanting to take their turn so my response was "Ummm Yeah...that's not going to happen". Kid looked at me funny and then walked away. I think this response would be appropriate for the OP's friend.

You didn't "lose a friend"--you paid the 'friend' to get out of your life permanently. Whatever it cost you, it was "minimal"... you could have forked over 2 or 5x the amount of money that you did.

To the OP, did you win the lottery? It sure sounds like you did, with this 'acquaintance' coming out of the woodwork with his hand out. He ain't known you enough to call since high school, but since you've got a Corvette that he knows about, he calls on you??

You DO know YOU'RE liable for damages if he won't stand up to responsibility, don't you? Even if he has insurance (of any kind), it's you and your auto insurance that'll be legally obligated if anything happens while he drives your car... I'd rather co-sign a house note for a true friend (and I have) than loan my Corvette under your circumstances.

LOL because this happened to me.
Knew the guy over 30 years, was supposedly well seasoned w/ all kinds of HP cars. Right?
Warned the imbecile over & over power easily gets away w/ LS7, thought my repeated warningS were clearly understood.
So he gets behind wheel & we approach a T intersection & stop, proceeded to turn left onto a state highway.

FIRST thing idiot does is floor it @ WOT as we're turning.
Guess he was going to demo his skills controlling a drift.
Rear quickly swung around & car's out-of-control.
Idiot stands on brakes, too late, too much energy.
We end up hitting a curb jumping onto island where it stalls.
Thankfully curb was only ~3" high so no damage to splitter etc.
Got real lucky.

A warning re letting others drive my car, whether I'm w/ 'em or not.
Learned NO ONE respects your car like you. Period.
YMMV, forewarned is forearmed.

I don't even let anyone borrow my F250.
People I know, know better than to ask me such a stupid question.

My long-departed father's advice was "Never lend your car, your ID, or your girlfriend".

Made sense to me!

Boys got a set of nads, I'll say that. I would politely say, "No, sorry, I'm the only one that drives my Corvette".

Just say no! He does know they rent a lot of "nice" vehicles, right? I've seen things like that before, and they usually turn out badly, but your car, your choice.

I don't even let my wife drive mine. She has never asked and only rode in it once. My toy. On the compassionate side, I got her a new Highlander so she is happy. You'd be absolutely crazy to lend your Corvette. Besides, it is impossible to impress people with somebody else's car.

This person is not a friend he is only an acquaintance. And my answer to him would be "Sorry, no way in hell does anyone drive my car."

Don't know why it is hard to say, sorry but NO especially if they don't own a high performance car.

Besides, do you know of anyone who has gone to a wedding and not drank?!

I understand you dont want to be rude. So what I personally would say so he wont take it too offensive is, Sorry man, I lent my brother the vette and despite telling him what not to do, he did it anyways and caused some damage to the car. With that being said I no longer loan out the car otherwise I would.

True story by the way
