This was at Auto Club speedway last month with speed ventures. I was driving my Z51 in this session. This is the fast intermediate group. I went to look at the lap times between sessions and there were several drivers complaining about the Z06 to management. After that I didn't see him for the rest of day. Someone said that he was asked to leave.
The Gt3 is a regular there and he is really fast. I usually see him doing nice clean lines and smooth. That day he was driving his GT3 in 3 different groups. Both advance and fast intermediate. I guess he got sloppy when he got into a dogfight with the Z06.
I do find it amusing that so many are referring to the guy in the passenger seat as an instructor. (Here, on Youtube, and Jalopnik)
That must incense actual HPDE instructors. That guy is no instructor. Just some guy who stayed at Holiday Inn the night before.
Just because he is waving his hand around, doesn't make him anything more than a passenger with maybe Parkinson's.
An instructor, even in the loosest groups that don't require training for such, is an experienced advanced driver. That guy was "just some guy."
You're preaching to the choir. Yea, it pisses me off (I have a nasa instructor certification), but more importantly, the guy in the passenger seat was a danger to everyone on the track just as was the driver. By riding in the passenger seat and waving his hand, he is establishing himself as a "person of knowledge" to the driver, yet he did nothing to curb, curtail, or educate the driver during that session. IMO he was worse than the actual driver; if he was a real instructor he did absolutely nothing to instruct, and if he wasn't, he didn't belong in the seat in the first place trying to provide driving guidance.
The driver is a total idiot. The sad part is how he puts everyone else in danger while he is out there being an ***. They should have pulled him off the track and banned him for that behavior. He isn't there to learn because he thinks he knows it all as it is. Unfortunately, the problem is that these high powered cars just like any other high powered car can be bought by fools.
This Z06 probably won't be on the street much longer.
I have the highest respect for the team that programmed the PTM software, and the integration with the hardware. For this guy to drive the Z06 like that (I am being generous with my use of the word "drive"), and for it to have stayed on the track is seriously impressive. At one point late in the video, the engine power is cut to nearly zero to save the car.
I am by no means defending the driver. But for instructors to say an HPDE shouldn't be treated like a race is silly. That's denying that every person there isn't competitive and that instructors don't mix it up on track the same way. I see more wrecks in the instructor group than any group. Most instructors don't even question this. They just say it isn't racing because so many in the past have said the same. In all reality it's very similar to gentlemens racing. Especially once you get in to the upper run groups with open passing. I've only seen a handful of students who aren't competitive and they're usually women. We all know how few women show up to the track. My point is, the majority of people that show up are competitive and to deny them of that is silly
Terrible driver. Horrible coaching if he is one.
Positive out of this video is that the Z did not overheat. Makes me wonder if the issues we see on this site are not car specific.

Only guys I've seen on here claim over heating can push the car very hard. I wouldn't consider this guy one of them. He was overdriving the tires from not being smooth. I would imagine his times aren't very close to any of the overheating cars in the forum

According to him, if you listen to him right after he passes the GT3 (only to be passed again), his exact phrase was "I am f*ck*ng flat out like a m*therf**ker". He obviously thinks his skill level is close to Jim Mero's skill level.

Haha! I was instructing at COTA for the Goldrush rally a little over a week ago and over head a guy in the begginer group say, "I was driving 10/10ths". It was a good laugh

Well according to the videos description the driver of the Porsche was a pro racecar driver with a race team lol
This is Speed Ventures feedback on the incident that occurred at their event:
"We are well aware of the video. We do have a zero tolerance policy for drivers like this. It is completely unacceptable
1. The driver was sent home after that session.
2. The instructor was not an SV instructor - he is a friend of the driver who in fact has less experience on track than the driver himself."
Where did he learn the "chop" technique for coaching a more (2nd day on track) experienced driver?
This is almost unbelievable. It's comical that people like this exist.
Driver: @#$%* YOU, I'm Flat out @#$* ******@#$*@)#
Passenger: Never been on track but I will use wax on, wax off hand gestures to show you how to do it.... Daniel Son....
