Ever find yourself wondering what really makes a classic custom Corvette more special than the others?

Depending on who you ask, you’re liable to get answers like the make and model year, the kind of work done on the car, or the team that performed the work. And while all that might be true, sometimes it’s the circumstances that fueled the restoration that make it a bit more special than the others you come across.

That’s exactly what I thought when I stumbled on the story of this ‘61 roadster owned by Rich Stadelhofer, who purchased the car in 1997, and was driven to restore the Corvette after it was damaged in a fire.

“When I shut off the car in my garage and heard it backfire, I didn’t think much of it,” Stadelhofer told Super Chevy, recalling the day. “But the fuel somehow ignited and I came back later and found the car badly burned.”

Years later, the end result is a gorgeous hot-rod inspired Corvette with 534-horspower, which I’m sure is the envy of most everyone Stadelhofer encounters.

Check out more info and photos of Stadelhofer’s ‘Vette at Super Chevy, then let us know what you think.
