I'm an agnostic and as such I recognize that there are many things in our universe we have not even begun to understand.

This point of view is very different than an atheist who denies the existence of god.

I do not, however, believe in organized religion.

I wish you would study some history. This country was founded by people persucuted for their religious beliefs and they tried to ensure freedom of religion. That is where the whole thing about separation of church and state came from. Everyone should be free to practice the religion of their choice including no religion if they so wish. Mandatory school prayers, adding god to the pledge etc is not aligned with what the founding fathers had in mind.

I consider Thomas Jefferson one of the all time great thinkers and he confirms my belief that the best president is the person who wants the job the least. Read some of his texts. Very interesting.

I bow to the wisdom of our founding fathers:

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.

Ah yes, the "Christianity is under attack" myth. Try to take Bill O'Reilly with a grain of salt.

I tend to discount the leaders and philosophy of foreign governments like france and germany and the like. It seems we have a small percentage of our population who tend to put forth these foreign philosophies while at the same time enjoying the benefits and privledges of a society that is a direct result of policies they hate.

People of all religions built this country, not just christians. This was recognized back in the day:

Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting "Jesus Christ," so that it would read "A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;" the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.

-Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, in reference to the Virginia Act for Religious Freedom

Wow, might want to research who you're talking about there, and the context of those quotes. Hawking's quote for one has absolutely zero to do with him believeing in a god, it is a reference to Einstein's infamous quote against quantum physics which is also commonly misrepresented as a claim of religion. In fact from all that I have read I have to believe neither of them were religious on anything but the most remote level, Hawking least so.

You seem to be a fan of Einstein so here are some quotes for you:
It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. [Albert Einstein, 1954, from Albert Einstein: The Human Side, edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman, Princeton University Press]

The idea of a Being who interferes with the sequence of events in the world is absolutely impossible.[Albert Einstein]

We do have a state religion here, it is called Corvette.

Try worshipping Satan (Ford) and see if you don't get burned at the stake!

I think Lars might be a witch, what with all the hammer waving and "mysteriously" functional carburetors....

-Chris

This sums up my view of the universe better than I could:
What I see in Nature is a magnificent structure that we can comprehend only very imperfectly, and that must fill a thinking person with a feeling of humility. This is a genuinely religious feeling that has nothing to do with mysticism. [Albert Einstein]

Wow, you all missed the mark on this one. No one has mentioned the BEST thing about rednecks: Southern Rock! Not that new crap either. And forget ALL country music - it's bubble gum music for the masses.

I'm talking about classic bands / songs:

Skynyrd - dig deeper than Freebird and you'll find a catalog of gems! (Like Crossroads from One More From The Road Live).

The Outlaws - I saw them last year in a 500 seat place, front row, and they kicked butt! Green Grass and High Tides, still the best guitar jam ever recorded.

The Allman Bros - my God, they are timeless! What's not to like?

Black foot - a little flash in the pan, but they had their day.

Little Feat, Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker Band.

That's the best thing about redneck heritage.

I agree, they need to move on past the civil war stuff.

Current quantum physics is suggesting that we influence the universe at the sub-atomic level by just being an observer. If this proves to be true, as it currently appears to be, then perhaps the existence and influence of a higher Being would not be so impossible to accept.

Your theory is crazy, but it's not crazy enough to be true.
