Hey Tony,
Glad to see you responded!
Go out and work on the Harley until you get 100% again.
We both know a Harley can be put together using 0 brain cells!
Yep...Agent Orange didnt pan out as well as .gov hoped it would

Tony, I know you are struggling. I know and understand at least to some degree you are still seeing new things. But I think you need to see this too. YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE! And there are many people you haven't seen that greatly appreciate you!
tidy up. rearrange. hang stuff on the walls. sit in the car. hit the oil stains with purple power. just get the eff outta that chair!!!
But....but.....the chair is my friend .....even when I am UNDER it

Thanks A.T. I'll pass that message along to the few of us .gov hasn't eradicated YET (with Agent Orange complications)
The Gulf War-Etc. Vets need encouraging too...so sad
Question: the previous owner installed a ?set of gm unknown used heads? on the 1970 350 truck engine currently in the car, along with log-style exhaust manifolds. The engine idles/runs perfectly with the Holley 600 and regulated electric fuel pump. The TH350 trans shifts pefectly except for new kickdown solenoid being out of adjustment at the gas pedal.
I realize the heads/exhausts are inefficient, but is there anything I can do to the log manifolds to improve exhaust flow? I have already ground the manifold I.D.s to match the heads and also trimmed the exhaust manifold gaskets to match the ports which increased the idle 300 rpm.
The engine currently ha ?BB heads with 0.060 thick gaskets/160 p.s.i. compression....low h.p. but has a little kick to it above 2,000 r.p.m.
The budget alternative would be shorty/mid length headers to provide better flow to the 8 y.o. Patriot sidepipes that are still in great shape.
Im trying to plan for the engine bay/engine repaint/exhaust improvement when I pull the engine-trans.

improve exhaust manifolds. how far is lake pontchartrain? and how far can you throw them? i would look for real headers. shorties are pretty exhaust manifolds. what casting number on the heads? but most OE iron heads are pretty much all the same. even the ones that used to be considered special. none compare to iron vortecs. and iron vortecs don't compare to any aftermarket heads. going thinner on head gaskets will help a little. too little to justify the trouble and expense.

If the block is not decked and the heads are OEM then that .060 gasket is killing your compression. You should find a shim gasket that has a compressed thickness of around .015. If you want more power then a head swap and headers will help along with a slightly bigger cam or going to 1.6 or 1.7 rockers with the current cam. If you are just planning on really long cruises I would just swap to the 2 inch rams horns, swap the head gasket and get the bigger rockers. It ill give you great dependability and preserve any fuel mileage that you might have. I just depends on your end goals
Hey Tony,
If you are planning to run the side pipes, then I would look into a new set of Sanderson Short tube headers and ditch the log manifolds.
Sanderson has been around since the 60’s, are the best quality headers on the market, and are very reasonably priced.
Check their website and look at the dyno runs they have posted.
They are located in Torrance, Ca.
I have purchased several headers from them in the past and have always been satisfied.

Lake Pontchartrain = 45 miles.
I googled them...depending on the stamping they resale from $50 a pair up to $100 a pair. That would be a down payment on decent headers

The block has never been decked.Thinner head gaskets, true 1.6 rockers would definately get me 300 h.p., which is all I need for long road trips/gas mileage.
Thanks guys for simple beneficial swap information.

Will do! Oooops....Sanderson is $$$$too nice$$$$ for the improvemnt Im lookin for.
I will post stampings to see what heads and exhaust manifolds the o.p.'s friend installed...they may even be marine heads from the little knowledge I posess
the ram's horn may flow no better, but it is a corvette part, not an impala part. they show up 25 bucks each on occasion. shop FB market for used headers too. BUT; your current manifolds. they fit your pipes. they are hooked up. they are not a detail to mess with now. chevy marine heads are 350 heads. nothing different. as long as they aren't 305 heads they are allowed to stay. you sure on that head gasket thickness? even 20 buck 041 thick felpros are an improvement on them. 029 composition can be found. but steel shims like a fresh finish to some number you ain't getting close to with scotchbrite.
