OOOOOOOOOOPS...I can't do a good cleaning job on the door mechanisms....time for a trip to the store......I wore out the wire wheel on my bench grinder the other day.
May as well stop at the Lock Repair store and get the tiny springs for the passenger lock now that it's apart.
SCORE! The locksmith across town had all the small parts for the passenger lock.....then I hit "ChinaFreight" for the brass and the steel wire wheels. I also bought a hand-held bead blaster for the small parts since I keep the portable blasting cabinet on the top shelf rather than take up needed floorspace in my two-car garage.
Now for the Weather.........we've gotten 3 feet of pre-melted snow since 6 a.m. (3 inches of rain)! The bayous (creeks) are starting to rise/doesn't take much for them to reach the bottom of the piers.

20 minutes later................................... .....................................

O--O--O--O--O--K! The electricity is on again....I can send this.

, pre-melted snow...you may have to switch to an air boat project if that rain keeps up!
When the giraffe needs a 3' long pipe to breathe through......we're in trouble......in past floods when the levees broke up north above Memphis, the Mississippi River was within a foot of going over the tops of the levees down here....if the levees fail, thousands would drown within a few minutes since there are many towns along the river with 10,000+ residents. We have hundreds of square miles of
dedicated flood zones" that are surrounded by levees that branch away from the main levees along the Mississippi River....I have seen those flood zones filled to the tops of the levees twice in my life/NOT a good thing.
The snow you guys are getting deluged with will take a month to melt and get to south Louisiana by way of Old Man River.....then the "FUN" will start.

R. Yes.....Harbor Freight....but they are everywhere! It makes a good "3 minute set-up"/you can be ready to blast parts in 3 minutes if you don't have a blasting cabinet available. As for media blast, H.F. sells it also--walnut shells/beads/etc.....but if you don't plan on re-using the blast media, you can buy sand that goes in "sand filters" in swimming pool filter systems.....OR........my favorite is the "Playground Sand"...it is filtered/sifted/very fine granule sand that you can buy at Lowe's & Home Depot....it doesn't clog the blasting gun and can be re-sifted if you place a sheet of visqueen on the ground with it attached to the side of the garage like a "backstop". I blasted the passenger door parts in 1/4 the time it took to wire-wheel the driver's door parts (I could have blasted the door metal also, but it only had light surface rust in several places. I also have a large cabinet that will fit trailing arms/heads/control arms/etc. that is portable/"tabletop" that is stored on a high shelf out of the way.
Time to go to the garage and install the parts/I still haven't found the vertical rod that actuates the door lock/I'll fab a temporary rod until I order a new one. I'm still amazed at how much Vette parts resemble aircraft parts----like the trailing arm bearing housings/door rods/linkage on the door mechanism-- basically the same as '60s era helicopter parts and linkage that I am familiar with.

Exactly! Prophesied about 40 years before the actual Katrina event. (If Led Zeplin had written it on a subway wall...hmmmm....per Simon & Garfunkle)

Actually I have lived north of New Orleans for a while....but my Aunt who has lived in New Orleans for 80 years was visiting her daughter in another city the week that Katrina hit.....her house was submerged for several days.
Now for an UPDATE: After an all-day visit to the Zoo I was able to re-install the door hardware....Tomorrow I'll make sure everything works correctly---then I'll put the door panel on......(I had to fabricate a temporary rod for the Lock/Unlock mechanism)
I need to pick up a 6-pack of (green-yellow zinc-chromate=like) primer for the sheetmetal (which happens to be the same type/color primer used on Army helicopters during the Viet Nam era......coincidence???????)

Had to get mine at amazon. Couldn't find it in any store. EPA!
Cancel the work! I was about to install the door lock but small pieces of the tumbler flaked off causing the two short springs to pop out....the tumbler is now a paper weight.
I ordered a 1974 GM lock and will use the newer parts to rebuild the lock.
Maybe by tomorrow afternoon?
Ohh well....I'll clean all the tools off the passenger floorboard and DRIVE the car to the lock shop before the gas in the tank goes bad....LOL!
That little Blaster is a neat little thing to have around . i have one like it ( plus a medium size cabinet *not hooked up yet * ) But im lucky enough to have a nice blasting cabinet at work that i use all the time , cleaning things during lunch .
Looking good DG , I finally jumped back into mine with both feet . Results / pics soon ....I cant believe i stopped working on it for so long ....
