Depends on my mood and how big a jerk he is. I generally ask him what he is driving. Most of the time their response is, I had a Vette when they were steel bodied and now I have a 72 Dodge van.
It's not worth shedding your blood or losing your liberties, is it?
I know, it's hard to Not counterattack ... but instant-karma vengeance has seldom paid me a long-term yield ... just keep your powder dry and wait for a COLD situation.
I've had the same thing happen to me in regards to my LS swaps. The half a dozen or so projects all had LS swaps. Most people walk up and say that's cool and ask questions. Then there are the few that make comments about how I ruined the old car vibe by swapping in the LS. I often respond by asking them if they have driven a LS equipped car with 500 rwhp and still gets over 20 mpg? Most just walk away without further comment. I suspect it's because there brains can't formulate a sentence with out thinking about it for at least 10 minutes before hand.
The most negative comments are directed at my 98 Wrangler with the LS6/4L60E swap. All the Mopar guys think it should have a hemi.
At the end of the day I really could care less what other people think about my hot rods. Their mothers never taught then the golden rule of "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all".

I have a coworker who is swapping LS motors into two Fox body Mustangs. Gets a lot of grief from the Ford guys. Those folks just aren't normal.

Be kind and sympathetic. Try to help him. Put yourself in his unpleasant and suffocating position. How would you feel if you had YOUR head up your ***? Remember the Golden Rule.
Some people are just rude, speaking before thinking. At a car show once a guy next to me started talking about stuff and made a comment about my car was unsafe . Just so happens my car was a Corvair, yes a Corvair. I have 3 along with a Corvette and others. He stated that they were prone to roll over, I laughed looking at what he was driving and said , I bet I would be able to out corner you any time without even being close to getting out of control . He was driving a Jeep with 44's . That was the end of that .
I haven't gotten any negative comments about either of my Corvettes, even the ratty one. But I had forgotten that dozens, perhaps hundreds, of people were nice enough to point out that my 66 Corvair was unsafe at any speed. I had a Ralph Nader for President sticker on the bumper, to try to get inside people's OODA loops. I don't know if it helped.
The 65-69 rear suspension is nearly identical to the Corvette, and it was the best handling car I've ever owned. It weighed 2/3 what my C3 weighs, and wore the same tires.

In my incident I'd say somewhere north of 6' 8". I'm 6' 3" and this guy was a tree. My reaction wouldn't have changed if he were a foot shorter, but he definitely got my attention.
You don't have to own an old car to appreciate them and go to a car show. Whether you have one or not some people don't know how to act like adults and/or watch their mouths
Play the long game on this one.. you said he is looking for a car... wait until he actually buys one, and when you see it just respond with "you ACTUALLY bought that? ...... haha" and walk away.

I like to say...…"Ohhhhhhh...You don't know the half of it!".
(FYI: It also works if they despise your Religion)
