I was at tdc. I put the timing chain on with the heads off so I could see it. I didn't rotate it 2 times to see if the lined back up. When I backed the timing down a couple days ago it wouldn't run very well at all. Also another thing to think about, when I pull it into gear, my engine kills. I had someone else put it into gear while I watched it with my light and my timing drops from 10* adv. to like 2* retarded.

Is the vacuum advance hooked up and is it connected to a ported or unport fitting.
When setting the timing the vacuum line should be disconneted.

That timing might drop off could be because the engine is dieing unless it contiues to idle awhile. What is the story on your dist.--what did you do to the advance weights?
Lets go back to what Little Mouse was saying and move timing back but first set idle up so it wont die.Just keep the bolt on the dist holdown a little loose and do it by hand while the engine is running.Leave the timing light on the bench for now.Did you get that vacumn reading?

OK --I have to go to shop and finish puting this 69 back together so I can get paid.I will send you the phone number, feel free to call and maybe we can straighten this out.
dwncchs I have been thinking the same thing on the cam break in it worrys me a little. I guess when he gets it where he can set the idle
up and run the cam in for breakin we are going to need some more
luck, his luck is not all bad he has no bent pushrods or valves.
Besides all the cam lube does he have some of the GM additive for the oil
and oil that still has zinc in it?? Its been a long time since I put a cam
in anything and there was no problem with oil.

Ok, I couldn't get ahold of him so I went and bought one. At idle I get about 10 then then I slowly rev it up it drops to about 5 and climbs back up. But if I jab the throttle harder then It will drop down to 1 or 0. Then if I jab it even harder then she will backfire. If you want I can make a video of it and post it so you can hear it and stuff.
