don't weld the shifter bracket to the x-member. the front two bolts may have to be shimmed in order to center the shift handle in the console shift plate. it has to be raised in the front sometimes so that the shift lever tilts rearward to prevent contact in the reverse, first and third positions. also consider using the short-throw holes in the shifter.
also (it's been a while) but i remember that my x-member had two "ears" in the middle that the shift bracket attached to. if you need, i can get under my car and take a picture.

Here a pics of bracket

My car never had any shims on the bracket to the shifter as stated by jnb501. I looked for a factory part number but nothing. Again contemporary corvette will have it.

I don't have pics of linkage but I can tell you how to set up the linkage. I had all the parts powder coated and I never took a pic before I took everything a part. Not smart!

1 Set reverse first. Let shifter sit in neutral and align long and shorter rod so shifter slides through the gate no problem (Left to right) Your shortest rod is reverse. You have to get the length right so the shifter goes into reverse without any binding.

2 Next do the same for the middle length rod

3 then the longest rod

Always checking the the shifter slides right to left very easily. There is a gate in the shifter, so when all the rods are in neutral the shifter moves left to right very easilee. If the rods are not lined up correctly the shifter binds because the alignment opening are not right.

I can give you pics of my linkage settings, they'll be close, but your trans maybe different then mine. It may give you a starting point but you need to first get this bracket problem resolved.

okay, we were able to get the bracket that goes onto the X member. very rare item since it is only specifically for 80-82 wherein there were limited cars in this era with manual transmission.
also got the yoke for the tranny as well since the original yoke from the car is small.

First thing to do is you want the shifter to move from left to right freely. (Neutral)

1 person in car moving shifter. 1 person playing with linkage.

Take the three linkage bars and move them forward or backward so that the shifter will move freely right to left. Tape the three bars togehter.

Now move your linkage up to the trans and make sure each of the trans bars are in the neutral position and align each bar to the appropriate location.

At this point you would have all three linkages connected to the trans and the shifter is moving freely in neutral.

If you have any questions you can call me at 847-922-4676

We have the shifter on neutral and the tranny as well. I will get under the car and try to do exactly what you said. Hopefully, all works.
The problem we encountered was that the transmission doesn't move when we try to push with the linkage. Hopefully with the linkage connected to the shifter, it'll move.

[QUOTE=dobroman2001;1569108926]Here's something I wrote a couple of months ago... mine is a '76.. Hope this helps. Also some Pics that may help at:

I was wondering if there's much of a difference between your 76 and my 81.

If I remember right. It's not easy but I could get the trans to shifter forward and backward. I could get it to shift but the arm must be mounted as in this pic. I thought your car is a 81? Is it or is it a 76? BTW your link just goes to photobucket not your pic.

I'm pretty sure his is an '81... that Pic link is one from my stuff when I did my '76. The Tranny's are difference (mine's a M-21) but the pedal..etc stuff should be real close to the same thing. That was why I sent the pics...

My car is an 81, what is the switch you have on your tranny for? Also, you have a small linkage connected to it, mine doesn't have that.

Arms need to be that way. Switch is for backup lights.

Hope this helps. It shows the gate (guage pin)I'm talking about on upper right side of sheet

How about the neutral safety switch? Where did you connect this? I tried to start the car and it won't. I believe that it has something to do with the neutral safety connection. From the auto shifter, do I wire it down to the clutch pedal?

Go to Corvette Central or Wilcox and punch in safety neutral switch . There is a switch that goes on the clutch and brake housing it has a purple/w white and yellow wires going to it. These wires connect to the same colors on the Safey Neutral switch

How did you wire yours? Did you connect it straight to the harness?

My car was a 4 speed car form the factory. I think your reverse lights will unplug and you can replug the new harness from the new 4 speed. Connection is to the right/passangers of the brake booster on the fire wall.

What more to do have to do before your done?

Will tackle the pedals today. I thought it could be done without removing the column.

would the back up light switch be the same as the one for auto? my connections are all on the auto shifter for both back-up lights and neutral safety. Does the auto tranny have this particular switch as well mounted to it?
