Have you seen the Grand Am rack and pinion swap?

I spun a bearing in the old L-82 350. I spent over six months trying to obtain an aluminum block and gave up. I had the stock block machined and bored .030 over and clearanced for a 383 crank. Putting the engine together now. While the engine is out, I'm going to a Borgeson power steering setup. I've been driving an LT1 C4 in the mean time, great car, and cheap! Stay tuned.

BTW I was down to 3000lbs when the engine died. Once the car is up and running, I'll start trimming the pounds again.
Hey, How is everybody? Gkull? Paul Dana? 69427? 427-sbc? Justin? You all good?

Bee Jay, I was fed up with the bickering on this forum and then I retired. I got a small golden parachute to hit the road and I just went anywhere I wanted to for the first year. I'm just a couple weeks from my next adventure. The southwest and quading then back to Mediterranean Europe in late April.

The last thing I ever saw about you and your car was the broken right front suspension. Do you have pictures of how to cure it or did you get a whole new frame? The last time I checked both Motown and Dart had aluminum small blocks.

Fantastic thread Bee-Jay.
Thank you for sharing the ideals, data and results.

My 72 got weighed today. 3180

Dart iron block, aluminium heads & intake, VBP suspension, TH400, headers, L88 hood, steel rallys, no spare, no Jack and full tank of gas, rear window in, ttops on car. Next weight reduction plan is in the brake system with calipers & master cylinder.

Cool thread, some great ideas! I've ditched the spare and carrier, and am building an engine with alloy heads/inlet manifold/water pump which should help out. Planning to ditch the vacuum reservoir and vacuum actuators and put in electric headlights which will hopefully drop a bit as well. Haven't weighed the tremec tko600 box or the super t10 to see how much that swap changes things? I still have a steel spring in the rear. Might have to cough up for a fibreglass one at some point. I would like to pull weight out of the car where possible without making it obvious, so the things that you are doing interest me a lot. Great work!

I just did the Borgeson steering swap. The Borgeson is 5 lbs heavier than the stock box, but you toss out about 9lbs of ram and hoses and mount. I lost four more pounds. You can lose 5 lbs if you use a rag joint. I went with the all metal u-joint.

Ah ok, I've swapped in the Borgeson too, that's good to know, wasn't really considering weight at the time. What's the part number for the Borgeson U joint? I'm running the rag joint. Guessing my tubular global west upper control arms might be lighter than stock too I suppose.

3,000 lbs.
I did it!!!!!!!
While the motor was out, I cleaned and cleaned, and took a few ounces here and there and did the Borgeson swap. Also, like Zora said, boring the block trims weight. I did go with some lightweight, but heavy duty, parts inside the engine. The H beam rods were heavier than the I beams, but I want to take this 383 to 6500rpm occasionally. I still have a sound system and some speakers I never use anymore, and my heater core is still in there. In the mean time, I've gained 30 lbs.

Nice.
How did you manage to hit 3000 on the nose.
Loose 1 more pound and you can join the 2000 club.

Great move not to eliminate the pop up headlights. I have not saw a Corvette yet without the pop ups that I like.

Do you have a build/weight loss post anywhere or would you care to release the details?

2940 lbs
I just completed my LS7 swap, including a new hood. 427 cubic inches, 100 more horsepower, 100 fewer pounds.
If anyone tells you that an LS swap is cheap and easy, punch them in the mouth. Hard. Make them bleed, and take their cell phone so they can’t call their mamma.

Nice job!

It always feels good to take off big chunks of weight.

Awesome! I was wondering how you'd come out weight-wise.
I knew that you'd lose some weight with the aluminum block, but wasn't sure what you'd gain with the new hood on it and the dry-sump tank in there.

... And yeah, the LS swap can be a costly pain in the rear, but it's so worth it. I'm having a blast with mine.

What did you do to the T-tops for the weight reduction?

There's an old reply up there. It sounds like he replaced the t-tops with a "targa astro top"
I think it's these guys: http://www.astrotops.com/68_82tops.html
