In 1982 ...if my memory serves me correctly...the coolant temp sensor was a different design as what you can buy today. The new sensors are better...and that means that you need to cut off the old connector and install a new one....which is why I am asking IF you replaced the wring connector when you replaced the coolant temp sensor.

Lancer this is what your sensor needs to look like. If it doesn't, you may have been chasing rabbits. As many have mentioned, your coolant sensor is integral to the system and will totally confuse your ECM.
I got mine at AutoZone and swapped it in 15 minutes including soldering.
You have the current design which is GOOD but you MUST make sure that it was wired correctly. IF the wires were switched/crossed...the engine will run VERY POORLY.
If the car ran okay before you had this last problem then they are okay.but atleast tape up the connections ,best would be to solder them.this sending unit is what tells the computer the temp
