Default 1972 vette engine bay

Can anyone tell me with certainty what the finish is on the firewall , inner fenders? Are they suppose to be rough like krinkle paint or relatively smooth?

I've seen both.

Sure would like to see Alan71's photos.

Anyone heard from him?
Thank you in advance again

Should be relatively smooth but with a fiberglass strand texture -- a wrinkle finish is definitely wrong. A good paint for the engine bay panels is SEM trim black.

Added a photo of my '72's firewall before new harness, cleanup, and repaint. The texture is kind of like an orange peel.

I used a VHT satin black with good results after scraping and wiping the engine bay with acetone. It came out nice. I wrapped everything I didnt want painted in tin foil with a little bit of painters tape. I only had to mask the fenders and windshield with paper

Mine is a 1971. I'm about to tackle the firewall, inner fender, wiper bay and underbody paint while the body is off the frame.
My frame is gloss black epoxy (inside and out) and my engine bolts-ons are mostly semi-gloss (Dewitts Aluminium rad, rad frame, brake booster, etc.).

Semi-gloss seems to be too shiny and matte black seems to be too dull. After reading several post (below) I’m leaning toward Semi-flat/satin black so John Deere Blitz Black might be the winner. I hear it’s super durable.

Cheers,
Richard

Cheap satin black paint is what was used as "blackout" paint for engine compartment surfaces, wiper well, wheel wells (top and bottom side) and other incidental areas. Any satin black paint will do; but Krylon and John Deere (Blitz Black) paints seem to be the most used and most recommended.

Blitz Black is totally fine, but I think Eastwood Underhood black is closer to the original factory color. Eastwood and the old Krylon 1613 Satin Black are very similar. A little more sheen with Blitz Black. Look at this thread I have posted pics with both Blitz Black and Eastwood used underhood. Go to posts 9 and 11. Blitz Black may be more readily available. Good luck.
