427 BBC Conversion FINALLY Started!!!
the sale of Adelphia will be completed on the 31st, my paychecks either reduced or delayed for a few days, and i'll have my first regular check from Time Warner Cable in late august, so hopefully back to modding then...
neither is the case, but it has been put on hold while i make some fundamental quality of life improvements.
i bought a new computer and flat screen monitor, paid off some bills, and will be taking a vacation next week to visit the gf...
the project is far from dead believe me...i just don't think it'll see the road at all this year...more than likely next year, and HOPEFULLY in time for cruise-in. the interior is in absolute shambles so if i do show up, expect the outside to be needing work, the interior to be all but one step from gone...but the motor will run and i will try to drive it down and back. IF not cruise in then since it's ALOT closer to me i'll at least have it going by corvettes at carlisle which is only 4hrs away from home for me.
as for project status...UPDATE TIME
well, nothing new really. next piece to order is the distributor so i can button up the top end and prime and roll over the motor this winter by the starter, which is hooked up and functioning just fine. most of the wiring is done. as far as i can tell the only functions i lost were the mileage stuff from the dash.
i have no fuel pressure, which means either i have a slight error in my wiring, the relay is shot, or the oil pressure switch was somehow damaged in the swap. i jumpered the wire for the fuel pump on the relay direct and still didn't get sprayed in the face, so something else seems amiss. the fuel pump itself functioned perfectly fine when i parked the car and the tank does have gas in it. it really doesn't matter since i probably will be running new larger ga. wire to the fuel pump directly off a seperate relay anyways. oil pressure status unknown at this point since motor cannot start on its own. we'll find out in due time but from what i can tell, it's giving the starter a fit which means it's building compression...
as far as other minor setbacks, i may or not need a slim fan to fit my accessory drive. i think i'll be fine, although i still don't have a place plotted out for the power steering pump. i will more than likely have to order pulleys and then mock the system up first to determine what i'm gonna do. a possible scenario involves relocating the pump to the former spot of the air conditioning. then i'd have to have custom lines made but a local shop can do that for me on the cheap.
Also, i wondered why my rack would not go 100% lock to lock. i adjusted everything possible and tried to center everything and i STILL couldn't get it to go...then i noticed something the factory did...obviously the tierod ends are on a somewhat small shaft...well i thought that's all there was...i saw 2 notches in the frame but thought that's pretty messed up...
i started to feel the outside of that boot and press it down and sure enough those notches were there for a reason. those little shafts sure as hell come into something much larger, and those notches were provided as clearance! the passenger side is fine, but the drivers side will have to have the pinch cut out in a shape identical to the factory notch, just about 2" forward...problem with steering solved!
as for now, that's about all i can think of. i miss working on the car...but ambition and funds were lacking, and i sorely needed new stuff around the house. i'l getting back in the mood as i have to tide the garage up for winter storage so i'll be back to making some progress soon.
till next update...
The shop thats doing my body work has a 4l80e trans and computer. The trans is out of a truck with 9 miles on it. Was used at the local high school auto shop for teaching installing and removing trans to students. If interested I'll get you a price.
Regards
i have yet to see anyone break one, but it can't be unheard of (the 4L80 that is) - raptor is claiming to have a bolt in kit for the 4L80's - that would be slick...it's a full manual shifting trans though...which i sure wouldn't mind since i'll have a ratchet anyways...
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I can tell you now. I dont care what mad dog dose to the 700r trans, its not going to hold up to that engine.
Better get ready to install a stronger trans than that one.
Regards
The 700R4 is the strongest trans ever built
NOT!I have never seen a 700 hold up unless you can rebuild it every 20 runs.
I have gone through those junk trans.Monster trans is still giving me excuses .Atleast Raptor trans was honest with me ,they said it cant be done with any consistancy.
It is at best a crap shoot.
Put a TH400 IN IT WHEN RAPTOR GETS THE CASTING RIGHT .
They said may be in October.

the project has come to a standstill with the cold weathr change. i have the car prepped for winter storage and the engine sealed off. i will be doing minor other work over the winter months to prepare for completion and first turn key hopefully in the spring.
there's no turning back, and she will be completed!

job is kaput as of 2/5/2007 - so a major source of funding probably will be lost. i'm using my severance and stay on bonus to (wisely) pay off all my credit debt and a personal loan i took out. vette's payment will be made 3-5 months in advance so i have some time to get myself back on my feet.
after i do all that it still will leave enough to finish off the ignition and carburator though, so theoretically it will be able to fire by beginning of march...
Interior - i'm still torn as to strip it or restore it
It's still stored safely in the garage awating my surge of spring ambition to finish things off...i have alot of parts to buy still since i got back into computers and bowling recently. i bought some new parts and equipment for those hobbies and that's all paid off, so now with the driving season approaching i should be able to focus all energies on the vette.
i fully anticipating having at least ONE pass on the car in 2007 - the cruise-in? EH...if i make it it will pretty much have to be trailered and it will look like complete ***** inside and out. the only good thing would be the motor between the fenders.
i havent given up, but with life throwing curveballs and a mild bout of ADD i get distracted easily. I'm slowly making my way back out to work on the car again and hpe to do that very soon.
i have ~14 days left at my current job, about 5k cash coming, and soon to be alot of free time. after debt paydown i'll have about 1800 if i dont pay the car payments in advance. that would be enough to finish the mechanicals easily...however at this point being fiscally responsible for once might be the smarter move...
if i set myself up right in the near future, i should be able to land a much more comfortable job with a slightly higher rate of pay...then i'll have no issues getting the car finished...
my tasks for the near term are to brush up on welding and fix our MIG (my dad broke it), start to tackle the exhaust, finish off the top end...slowly but surely she'll get done...
thanks for all the support...
if the weather would brighten up a bit here in PA, i might be able to go outside and figure out where i left off...
my MIG welder is still broke...booooooo....dad is gonna try to fix it and set it up for gas welding...time to do the exhaust work...
the extra money from my severance went to a laptop and paying off other bills..and a bit of retail therapy, and a week with the woman after all of the rest was taken care of...do i regret the retail therapy? yeah...do i regret the rest? no...the laptop is proving to be the most useful purchase ive ever made...it just ate up all my car parts budget though...however there are a bunch of other things i can do in the meantime while cashflow is restored...
im gutting it...the interior is shot...minimal pieces will be left intact (or bought new) for asthetics...i'm thinking new dash, gauges, elimination of several non-vital items, replacement of glass with Lexan/Plexi, full cage...you get the idea...basically with where my BBC was headed as a motor...the car could never be a civilized street machine...so might as well go ***** off and get it over with...however with keeping several street necessary items it could b registered/insured and driven daily if desired...though highly not recommended...
