That was my point and aftermarket companies have a jump on in the world of disc in reguards to friction material and steels. It has been the band/drum arrangement that really hurts the 4l60s and the like.
The 4l90 is apparently going to be rated over 500lb when all is said and done. That gives us upgraded parts much like the 4l65 did right from GM.
Gear ratios are
4.02 First (silly)
2.36 Second
1.51 Third
1.15 Fourth
.86 Fifth
.67 6th
It also uses a 300mm conveter, that should allow all aftermarket converter people to jump right in. Potentially the current converters can be used but its to early to tell for sure on the pump arrangement.

So it looks like say a 10% change in the input planet set would net almost the same effective gear ratios we have now in the 4L60 except we would also have 2 effective OD. ratios.
3.62 first vs 3.06
2.12 second vs 1.63
1.36 third vs 1.0
1.03 fourth vs .70
.95 fifth
.74 sixth
Or the other option would be to go to the 2.73 axle and gain the additional strength of that gearset.
The real advantage is in the delta of the OD. ratio the 4L65 and 4L65 can be made to handle massave amounts of torque through the addition of extra plates and line pressures & calibration, I don't think the clutch to band design has any thing to do with it's limitations.

6 speed would be nice but there is nothing made that cant be blown up. They will be a lot less expensive and parts will be more available in a couple of years. Me can wait.
All ready seen one come thru the scrap route. That's how I knew the length is the same or dam close to the 4l60 . Unfortunately its was pretty trashed.
Your biggest issue is going to be getting around the TCU. It's integral to the valvebody now...I know of another company currently looking to interface thier TCU with it. If they get it to work, it will be a sweet setup. I've used thier current standalone TCU in other apps and it ROCKS!

when do you think these will be available? man i wonder how much?
any info on the fiber paltes? are they same as any other current gm??
I don't know if its been mentioned but this will be standard on the new GM SUV /Cadi SUV with the High output Motor/Block making 380 and 400 hp respectively. All other engine configurations will have a beefed up version of the 4l60E.

And maybe even fabricate the paddle like shifters for your steering wheel like the new 2006 C6 six speed automatic offers with this transmission.
