Now I am confused. If going from the C5 to the C6 shifter, won't the existing rubber isolator fit them both?
I went from the C5 shifter to the C6 shifter and the original C5 rubber isolator was a perfect match to the C6 shifter. I do not know what is different between mine and Patches.
Let's not confuse the C6 shifter with the Hurst. The C5 isolator should work fine with the C6 shifter since they are virtually identical from the base down. The reason I mentioned the isolator was in reference to the Hurst shifter. The pic below shows this. If you're switching fromt eh stock C5 shifter to the stock C6 shifter, it will be a direct swap so don't sweat it.

Great information .......nice camera work. Thanks
One easy way to do it is to bore it out and press in a sleeve with a 9/16"-18 female thread to fit the C5 shifter shaft like I did on my Hurst f-body ****. You could thread the hole in the tab at the bottom of the C6 **** to lock it onto the shaft.
I believe someone is already selling modifed C6 ***** that fit the C5 shifter. Dunno where, though - maybe ebay.
Why do you guys take the entire assembly apart, and not just unbolt the shifter at the gold-ish colored base (4 bolts)? I didnt have to take all of that out to install my shifters.
Sure, that's how a Hurst, for example, is swapped in. It doesn't come with the gasketed base already in place so you need to use the original that came with the car. There are only three Torx screws holding the entire base and shifter in as a unit.
I left the base on in this installation for two reasons. One was that it wasn't my shifter (I was only testing it) and I didn't want to pull the base off and possibly tear/ruin the gasket. The second was that I wanted to re-center my shifter and would need to loosen the coupling screw anyway.
It only takes a few minutes to pull the whole shifter/base assembly and it makes no difference whether you pull the shifter alone or the base with it. Infact, it takes less time since you don't mess with the gasket. Also, if you got a new base when you bought it, why not put it in?
My first post in the Forum. Took my 2001 coupe to my buddy Jim's house last night and he put the shifter in as I learned (he's done a number of shifter swaps in C5s). All went smoothly (took maybe 45 minutes) EXCEPT we couldn't get the stock C5 boot up over the shift **** retaining screw. The boot, as most of you know, has a metal collar under the leather and it could only be pushed down over the shaft JUST ENOUGH to expose the screw hole to put the **** retaining screw in. But it was tight to get it pushed down to that point and hence can't be pulled up over the screw.
Suggestions?
As a quick summary of the shifter, I really don't notice much in the way of shortening the throw. To me it's perhaps a 10% improvement if I had to put a number on it. It's definitely smoother though and the **** is a big improvement over the C5 ****.

Thanks, Thom...
Turn the boot inside out and install the screw from under the boot
Looks good and a great write up. I like the idea of the handle tilting back some. I have to keep the seat all the way back for leg room. This would help the long reach in 1,3, and 5....
