Of course the C5 looks dated. Its been 3 model years since it was the current design. I still prefer the lines and the interior styling of the C5. I've said it here before the C5 was a watershed change and numerous were sold. I think the C5 is the new Midstyle (C2) and in future will be looked back on as a significant car. In the mean time I'm going to enjoy mine and look forward to the C7. (if I still had my C4 and was upgrading today I would get a C6. However since I have the C5 I don't have a buring itch to change the C5 for a C6)
No! I get compliments on our '97 all the time. I work in an engine rebuilding machine shop in Nashville a couple of blocks from the Country Music Hall of Fame and many of the "gearheads" there ask me if my '97 is a 2004. They can't believe that is is nearly 11 years old!
Truly great designs (like the Porsche 911) don't need major changes every few years. When the C6's came out, I got a real laugh at the many Corvette fans that cried that it wasn't a big enough change.
I just bought my second Speedway White C5...I now have 2 of them & have absolutely NO desire to own a C6 period....I love the look & the feel of the C5 so much...The exposed headlights of the C6, the "grill" of it & how it looks "humped up" to me are not eve close to what a Corvette should be in my book....Being a very serious Corvette lover/owner...C7's will have to be different from C6's in a very traditional way for me to even think about them...they ended the C5 run prematurely in my book...
8 years is a pretty long run in this day and age. The average run for cars is 5 years and is getting shorter and shorter as time goes on. Honda is in the 3-4 year range now. This is possible because its the age of computers which shortens the redesign time by half of what it was in the early 90s. I wouldn't be suprised if we have a C8 only ten years from now.
I still get people asking me if that's a new vette. They are shocked when I tell them its a 2002. Honestly, the vette is so sleek and aerodynamic, I don't think it will ever go out of style.
Happens to me ALL the time...just the other day in a Barnes and Noble parking lot..guy comes up to me and says great Vette...brand new?? When I told him it was a 98 he couldnt believe it...to those in the know..perhaps somewhat dated....To the rest of the world...C5's look brand spanking new!
I have to chime in on this one again. So many people have added useful and true statements to this thread. And, as one member said....such a question posted on a C5 forum is bound to bring forth "biased" opinions".
Posts have been very varied.......from people who say they don't like C6, to admitting that it may grow on them. From C4 lovers who don't like the C5, to C5 owners who think the C4 is "dated". And of course all the C5 owners who are appalled the the meer thought that the C5 is being accused of growing old!
I think the truth is that any Corvette, no matter what the year, is an "exotic" vehicle which stands out in a crowd. To the completely uninitiated a mint C4 looks like a recent model. To those in the know its styling is beginning to "date". The C5 is still current enough where even "car buffs" can't tell it from a C6 at a distance.
I think the testaments stated here reinforce the fact that to 90% of the car-viewing public the C5 could be this year's model. Only when it is parked right next to a C6 would anyone begin to doubt its age. And even that doesn't mean that the C6 has better lines.....just that it has a "newer" look.
Personally, I think that Corvettes hold their looks so well, and so much longer, than pretty much any other vehicle that there is little fear of the C5 looking dated any time soon. In fact I think that it is only recently that the C4 has begun to show it's age....and much of that may come from simply knowing the technical advances of the later models.
The C5 was a fairly radical departure in terms of styling from the C4, whereas I don't think the C6 ventured too far from the basic look of the C5. I think C5 owners can sleep in their beds safe in the knowledge that the C5 will attract "Oohs" and "Ahhs" for a long time to come.
This thread has been dead for a few months now but, I have to say that being the proud owner of two C5's...I have no desire for the C6 at all...I even thought the car would "grow" on me but it hasn't. I like the rear portion from the back of the doors to the back of the car but the rest does nothing for me...I'll stick with my C5's. I think Chevrolet hit it's mark with the C5 like it did with the 63-67's. Just my opinion of course...
The '98 thing continues... mine still has people shocked its that old. The best comparison is the first corvettes, they don't look dated, they look classic.
I prefer mine to the c6
