Quick question just in case no one has mentioned this:

How will you be holding up the valves to be able to change the springs?

If you buy the tool glbeauchamp recommends, I've been told to chuck the hardware and replace it with grade 8. I did so myself, but am waiting for a slow day to replace my springs. I also purchased a Crane valvetrain organizer. I think you will need a magnet to pull the keepers out. Jegs has everything you need to do the job. I've also been told that when you pull the plug wires, the original ones will fall apart, so I bought some new plug wires and plugs.

Good luck.

I replaced my plugs and wires over the summer. So getting them back out has been a breeze.

My 04 z06 also had gray springs. There was some sort of strip but it wasn't very visible. Maybe orange.

What I did notice is that they were stiffer than my new blues...almost like if they had a higher spring rate.

I almost put the old ones back in. Maybe the heat cycles made them stiffer?

Ok I’ve run into a problem.

Got it off everything on the drivers side pretty easily.

Workijg on the the passenger side. Taking the rockers off and they are tight as crap. But the 8mm socket I used all down the drivers side is slipping off. Any ideas how to get these damn bolts off now

So somehow all 3 of my 8mm sockets have cracks in them from working on these things. How the hell did they wind up so tight.

And also still looking for ideas to get them oit

Maybe use an 8mm impact socket if you can find one. They have thicker walls and shouldn't split as easily. As for how they got so tight, I can't offer an answer to that one. I seem to recall the torque on those was 22 ft lbs.

Do you need a special tool to compress the springs for install? Or is it just a screwdriver and some rags?

4 screws out. 6 sockets broken. I’m out of sockets now.

Need to go to sears to replace and Lowe’s for smaller impact sockets

Well got 7 of them out. And broke my 7th socket.

The good news is the bolt I thought was stripped probably isn’t since I broke the last socket on that one. But this is insane. Has anyone else ever had these bolts so tight

Anyone have the procedure for re torqueing the rocker arms? My springs have been changed in the past but id like to do the trunion upgrade. How do you get them all tight when you cant spin the engine over?

You simply torque them all at 24ft lbs. No need to roll the engine for each one.

Once all have been tightened rotate the engine one turn and check each one again at 24lbs.

Those were all old school craftsman, at least 20 years old. In all those years I maybe had broken 1 socket. I dont know why these things are siezed on there so badly, but atleast Im down to only one more bolt to get off.

Mine came off OK with a 6 pt Craftsman 1/4" drive socket. It does seem like a very small bolt head for the torque. I'd probably buy a 6 pt socket in a 3/8 drive if I did it again.
