Many peoples choose AGM batteries for their maintenance-free nature, spill-proof design, and vibration resistance. These features make AGM batteries ideal for various applications, such as boats, RVs, and off-road vehicles. Additionally, AGM batteries offer deep-cycle capabilities, fast charging, and a longer lifespan when properly maintained, making them reliable and efficient power sources for a wide range of demanding tasks.
Unless your Corvettes OEM battery was an AGM best to stick with a lead acid...charging rates between AGM and lead acid are completely different if you didn't know that.
The real key to AGM is education on how they work and how to service them properly.
The AGM is great for cars like the Corvette that have an issue with the computer and other important things under the battery.
Most people struggle with AGM because they do not know or have not learned that while it is a battery there are some simple things you need to know and learn.
Often the batteries that are claimed bad are just deeply discharged and different procedures are required.
Once most AGM batteries get below 10.5 volts you need to use an AGM charger or hook another battery to stimulate the Diode to let it charge.
I have used the AGM for many years and average about 12 years with them. One car the mount is metal and part of the cars structure. I went AGM to prevent corrosion and the mount is like new today. Other similar cars the mounts are damaged.
One key is make sure you have no parasitic drain issues. Also long term storage use a tender yo maintain the battery.
Like many things on cars today they may look similar but they can be dramatically
different and just because you know the old way does not preclude you from learning the new ways here of new tech.
There are pros and cons to either battery but the lack of corrosive isdues I find are a greater benefit. GM also made the same AGM move in 02 to prevent issues. I have seen the computers killed by acid batteries and this is a simple way to prevent that.
I've been running AGM batteries since about 2007. The first one, a Sears Platinum (aka Odyssey Extreme), lasted until about two years ago. Sears gave up on them as too many boaters bought them as trolling motor batteries and they ended up with too many warranty claims - their original warranty was very generous.
Anyway, replaced it with another Odyssey and it will probably last just as long. Only downside is that they are pricey. They are incredibly heavy by the way, somewhere north of 50 lbs. They claim to have a lot more lead in the plates compared to others and having carried one around, I believe them.
