His headers are coated and is having a detonation problem. Some people have had this problem with coated headers. The shop tuning the car also said they have had problems with cars and coated headers. Fovsky has already put a lot of money into this car. He is looking for an easier answer to this problem. These are a lot less expensive than paying $1,500+ for SS Long tubes from some of the venders on here.

why would i need o2 sims?

Some high flow cats flow so well that it trips the check engine light because the computer doesn't think any cats exist.

Great thread and cookbook; how do I get a set? The ebay sites mentioned don't list anything but rice and Ford stuff. I can't find ssauto on ebay but on their website, they want $550 w/o an x pipe.

Has anyone here gotten the seller to answer an emailed question? I'm going to buy a set, but can wait until early spring. I will wait if they plan to start making sets that are bolt on for '01-'04.

I have a 1999 A4 and got the Powerboost29 headers about a month ago. I had a local vette guy do the install and he was impressed with the finish, fit and ease of installation. I believe it was about a 3-4 hour job. Front O2 sensors were no problem. I had the cats removed and the rear sensors edited out in my tune. Having driven with them for a couple of weeks I have not had any problems. With a Passport performance meter I gained 0.4 seconds in the quarter with the headers and a cold air intake installed. Definite SOP gain as well!! Lots of bang for the buck!

As for cats, I'm up in the air as to use H/Fs or just eliminate the pup cats and use the stock main cats.

You'll find that the eBay headers are for 1997-00 C5's only, but you can block off the air tubes and eliminate the cold start air system and have it edited out of the Computer. If you do that you might as well install HiFlo Cats and have the aft O2 sensors edited out also.

I have a 97 and want to run no cats. What do I need in place of the cats? X pipe? I have stinger exhaust. What is needed to go from the collector to the stingers?

I'd just run the stock h pipe, it's the same size (2.5") as most x pipes. I don't see much gain in an x pipe and the stock h is stainless I believe.

You don't get something for nuthin. Looking at where the front 02's are mounted I'd say be prepared to replace them in the not to distant future. When the car is first started up condensation will collect on them a lot easier and stay there. As they warm up the condensation along with the heat may cause them to crack eventually with enough cold starts. Also, the 02 bung welds look pretty bad to me and it looks as though they were welded on after the headers had been coated. These headers are a copy cat of TPIS & Melrose. Do as you wish, it's your money, but the job you save by buying local may be your own.

The headers are all 304 SS and not coated. At least one set has been on for six or more months now. Wonder if anyone who is running them could comment on O2 sensor service problems due to condensation or excess heat. Any input on the quality of the welds? I think there was someone on here who is a welder or else owned a welding shop who could give us an input.

Oops. Just checked and they're 321 stainless not 304.

Charlie

Let me guess... you are one of those who spent $1500 on headers.

02 sensors are what, $100 each? I guess I can replace them 10 times and still be ahead of the game. Regardless, mine cleared just fine.
