Is 1st gear useless in a stock C5 with 4.10's? I'm also considering a swap. I would expect to run through 1st quickly, but I still want to enjoy 1st.

mcm, The higher the numerical diff ratio the quicker the car revs but you actually cover less ground, (you are gaining engine speed and losing wheel speed). The car will be more responsive with the mechanical advantage provided by the gearing but be preparred to shift more. No free lunch, if you want a little more kick while retaining your cars versatility I wouldn't go past 3.90. I have a 2001 C5 6spd, all stock and I find that the unmodified engine's torque friendly powerband works pretty well with the 3:42 diff. I could see me putting a 3:73 in, but nothing so aggressive that it would wind the motor past its torque peak too quickly. If I wanted it set-up mostly for the strip then it would have a 4:10 or more

Now that all my mods are done (except I'm still thinking about a set of high-ratio rockers), I'm thinking that I'll skip the gear swap in favor of eventually getting an M12.

When on the gas (I have a built LS3) I shift into second within, like 12 feet of launching the car from first.....this is on street tires though......
I kind of have to agree about first gear and if I was doing it again would choose 3:90 over the 4:10's on my 04 Coupe but I still love the 4:10's. Z06 guys with the M12 should be careful of which gears to get as the transmission is geared even lower the the MN6.

The M12 is Z06 only, everything else got the MN6.

Crazy fun on the street and almost a must if you want to run quick times (NA) at the track.

You'll turn a bit higher rpms on the highway, but it's not obnoxious at all

just my opinion.
I read this somewhere on the forum a while back and it helped a novice like me understand this gear thing.

I have the 3:15 rear from the factory. If I put the car in 3rd, not OD (auto) and run it exactly at 75 mph my tach reads exactly 3150 rpms.

If I had the 4:10 gears the tach would be reading 4100 rpms at the same 75 mph. Good way to find out what gears are in a car.

I'm probably the only one on forum that didn't know this!

Any of you guys running any HPDE events? I'd like to know if the gears helped on a road curse like pulling harder out of the corners. I've been considering doing this too but also considering putting an LS7 in my 2000 FRC so gears and an LS7 might not play nice together.

I have read on here that 4:10's are to much for HPDE.

Do new gears requiered somo "break in" or step on it right away? If so, how many miles? Are aftermarket gears weaker than stock? Where do you get the best deal on gears?(ring and pinion only)

Yes, 500 miles with no sudden take offs and not over 3000 RPM or over 50 mph. The aftermarket gears are generally stronger but it seems to be the casing that is the weak point so if the car will be used for racing a Diff brace would be a good idea.

Default 4:10's

I've got a '00 FRC. Currently I'm running a 402 (487RWHP/445RWTQ) w/LS3 heads, MN6 trans and 4:10 gears and the normal bolt ons. I love it.

I also had the 4:10's when I was running a H/C 347. The 3:42's didn't allow me to use 5&6 unless I was on the highway.

Now I'm waiting for a ERL 454 and plan on trying a 3:73/MN12 setup or 3:42/MN6. I might even pop the 4:10 in just to see what they are like.

I think the 4:10's make the MN6 cars more driveable around town.

I have a bult/tuned (bolt ons) car with 4:10, and frankly 1st gear is useless. Half the time I launch from 2nd unless Im at a dead stop.

Hard call between 3:90 and 4:10...but I sure do love em.

I bought the 4.10 ring and pinion set from RPM and they have been sitting in my closet for 2 months. After i bought them i am having mixed feelings regarding possible complications with the gear change. Possible whinning or leaky oil or any other problem. I am sure that the 4.10s will make my car faster but dont want any headaches. My local shop can change the ring and pinion i would do the proper break in.

ANy input? should i sell them? any bad experiences with the gears?

My 03 Z06 is stone stock. I rarely use 6th gear and I feel that a rear gear change would give me the best bang for my buck. What gear ratio would best suit my needs?

If 1/4 mile performance is important 4:10. If you drive the car alot on the street 3:90 for near stock hp and 3:73 for those running +100 hp

I would not go higher than 3:90 on a Z06.
