Coupe noise reduction - advice please
I have an 02 base a4 coupe, all stock except for a cat-back and wheels.
While driving, I can hear a lot of tire noise - which I expect, but I can hear some other noise.
1. It often sounds like a wind tunnel back there, I often check to see if the hatch is open (this is with the windows up) although I dont feel any air movement.
2. I often hear what I can only describe as the sound of a small garden waterfall. just light trickling noises. comes and goes.. and its not raining.
So, Im planning on some sound proofing back there, but Im wondering if the other two noises Im hearing may need attention first?
Any clues guys?
I did sound deadening. There are pre cut kits out there.... And I used one for the cabin.... But I had bought sound matting from an audio dealer some time ago and did the trunk and doors with it. Adds weight, but a bit quieter. Also put some between the inner wheel well shrouds and the fiberglass trunk tub. Pretty easy to do.
Per above, the rear "tub" is an SMC fiberglass style structure that has some sound proofing material present but not a lot. Sound proofing it will remove some of the road noise and possibly reducing the swirling effect to a degree, but you're not reducing the greenhouse from the cabin.
If your car has both tops then you can keep one of the tops in the rear. That reduces the overall space that the greenhouse takes up, at expense of losing that storage space and adding weight. Another option may be to purchase one of the partitions you see for sale by vendors. Some make them for targa coupes and having a protrusion between the cabin and rear trunk area will help reduce swirling sounds.
Do you have any idea where I could find this partition that you are talking about? the only thing I have seen is the 'Cargo Shade' which is a fabric piece that attatches to the hatch and looks a little like a hammock, supposedly to keep your car cooler & hide the cargo.
Get in touch with him on here and he will give you more information. This partition works very well.

Personally, I don't buy that just because there is a big area back there it will be noisy. I used to run a Fox Mustang hatchback - a big open area back there also, but the C5 noise level is significantly higher.

Big tires + wheelwells that you're sitting very close to make a big difference in perception of road noise.

I did something similar in preparation for a stereo. The carpet in the rear comes out easier than I thought it would. I placed squares of thinner 50 mil (to save weight) butyl sound deadening mat strategically in the back and behind the seats covering about 50%. Then I covered the cargo area almost completely with neoprene insulation (this stuff is really light weight). The back wall and fenders are where most of the noise was coming from. There was noise coming from the storage areas too so I stuck a sub woofer in the center one and tools in the sine ones. You cant get much insulation in the storage cubby holes or the carpet wont fit right.
I am currently building a 1/2 height divider, 12" high, it is level with the top of the tub with the hatch open, Im incorporating a cargo/storage unit into the divider.
Depending how that goes, I will order some neoprene.

The mat looks very polished in the rear cargo area so I don't think that I will add an aftermarket cargo mat on top of it.
While commuting to work this morning on the freeway I really did notice a difference. I did not have to crank the radio way up and the voices and music were much clearer.
If you are looking for a real easy sound insulation solution I would recommend this product.
It did however, take me double the 30 second recommended install time, due to me flopping it in there upside down and then having to take it out and flip it over because I didn't read the instructions.

First drive to work this morning and I can tell you it makes a big difference. Those that say it doesn't must have some really frickn' loud exhausts.
It took the resonance away that the road puts through the rear hatch area (hatch floor, plastic) and the road noise from the tires is probably cut in half.
There's also a noticeable "quietness" inside the rear now that I never had before. I always had that "white noise" behind my head from all the noises coming from the rear hatch area. Now it sounds like the entire car is quieter.
It made such a difference I am no longer worried about putting dynamat or peel and seal in my car. I will however still do the peel and seal on the floor boards under the car because now that the rear is so much quiter I hear road noise from under the car... lol.
Overall, it's a great buy and I'm glad I bought mine!!
I have an 05 vert with borla stingers and love the sound. But on the interstate and highway speeds, the car is just kind of loud. Not just from the exhaust, but from road noise. So I bought the new "blockit' insolation kit sold here on the forum. Not the kind that requires you to remove the carpet or anything. Just put two pads behind the seats and one pad in you truck, or cargo area for a coupe. I drove my car at 70+ MPH for a good ways last night and WOW!!! Much smoother and peacefull sound. The stereo sounded better and the car just seems so much quieter in the cab area. I have had a C6 coupe and now have a C6 vert, and I promise you, this thing works! Just wanted to shout out a nice mod.
With muffler flaps open the drone is reduced with the kit, but still louder than my comfort level. But it's a moot point now.
It arrived packaged well. Easy install with a precise fit. I was able to use the rings and shade. I found it able to make a nice noise reduction on all surfaces around Little Rock including interstate and different road surfaces including concrete and asphalt.
I'm very happy with the product!
So bottom line: I'd recommend(your hearing my vary) .
I can't say it's equal to the kits that require full interior dis-assembly since I didn't do that, but I definitely feel there is value in the product. If you are in Southern Calif and want to try in your car, come by and we'll throw it in and you can hear for yourself. Or just take my car for a test drive.

Started the car in my garage and could hardly hear the exhaust with the windows up. Backed it outside ( a lot of snow here now ) and tried the same thing, windows down ,windows up. I will not get to take the Z06 out until spring, but I can tell you that there is a substantial difference in the noise factor just sitting in the car and listening to it run.
Great product. Can't wait to do a more extensive test in the spring, but initially this seems to be a great product !!
Many thanks,
Dave
Super easy install - drop in and forget it. I have a coupe.
Big rear mat had the slits for rings.
Put my Stingray logo rear carpet on top of the mat and also put the mats behind the seats.
I can tell a difference in noise ; can hear the radio better and believe a long cruise will be far more pleasant.
I did notice the action of the Bose audio pilot (auto volume compensation) is much more noticeable now and I turned it off.
The roof panel still fits back there fine..

Pics look good. I've thought of making my own, too. Interesting design with the angled back. Is this a drop in design, or are you securing it somehow?
What are you doing for finish? Carpet? Matching to factory? Other?
I have no plans to secure it, it is removable, it is shape fitted to the wheel wells so it cant really go anywhere side to side, and once its carpeted (im using black subwoofer carpet) it will be a fairly tight fit.
I added the two small pieces at the back to stop it from potentially flipping backwards.
I have driven with it in the car as is, and even though I dont drive on the limit, I am known to not slow down for corners. and it didnt move at all.
My motivation behind building this was purely costs. while Im not poor, I like making my own stuff when I can save.
I was thinking about buying a divider that I had seen, and a cargo organizer, but together they were almost $250.
My unit once completed will be approx $40 and will be one unit rather than two separate pieces.
1/2" MDF 4' x 2' $10
8' x 4' Black speaker carpet $17.99
Spray Adhesive $9.99
Plus a few screws and wood glue I had in my garage..
