Default Coupe noise reduction - advice please

OK, so let me try and explain where I am at, and what I am asking..

I have an 02 base a4 coupe, all stock except for a cat-back and wheels.
While driving, I can hear a lot of tire noise - which I expect, but I can hear some other noise.

1. It often sounds like a wind tunnel back there, I often check to see if the hatch is open (this is with the windows up) although I dont feel any air movement.

2. I often hear what I can only describe as the sound of a small garden waterfall. just light trickling noises. comes and goes.. and its not raining.

So, Im planning on some sound proofing back there, but Im wondering if the other two noises Im hearing may need attention first?

Any clues guys?

It's the ghost of the previous owner. Call a medium to resolve it. Lol.

I did sound deadening. There are pre cut kits out there.... And I used one for the cabin.... But I had bought sound matting from an audio dealer some time ago and did the trunk and doors with it. Adds weight, but a bit quieter. Also put some between the inner wheel well shrouds and the fiberglass trunk tub. Pretty easy to do.

You're going to hear a lot of noise thanks to the targa coupe's "greenhouse." Any vehicle with that sort of greenhouse - a rear hatch that has no seats - is going to experience some additional wind and road noise by nature. The convertibles and FRCs/Z06s do not have the same noise thanks to the lesser greenhouse behind the occupants. I have a daily driver hatchback that has one of those trunk cover partitions and every time I remove it I can hear swooshing and swirling sounds in the back.

Per above, the rear "tub" is an SMC fiberglass style structure that has some sound proofing material present but not a lot. Sound proofing it will remove some of the road noise and possibly reducing the swirling effect to a degree, but you're not reducing the greenhouse from the cabin.

If your car has both tops then you can keep one of the tops in the rear. That reduces the overall space that the greenhouse takes up, at expense of losing that storage space and adding weight. Another option may be to purchase one of the partitions you see for sale by vendors. Some make them for targa coupes and having a protrusion between the cabin and rear trunk area will help reduce swirling sounds.

Thanks for the in-depth input, makes sense. it is a pretty large open area back there...
Do you have any idea where I could find this partition that you are talking about? the only thing I have seen is the 'Cargo Shade' which is a fabric piece that attatches to the hatch and looks a little like a hammock, supposedly to keep your car cooler & hide the cargo.

One partition out there is made by Crazy Cowboy. That's his handle on corvetteforum. I have one of his. Along with the cargo shade it helps reduce noise from the rear hatch area.
Get in touch with him on here and he will give you more information. This partition works very well.

Also if you are running run flats they seem to make more noise vs non run flats, the rockers are hollow I fixed a lot of noise by taking the access panel off and spray foaming them stops the factory echo chamber.

Stuff your cargo area with pillows? Or if you think you'll need the cargo space at some point, fill it with beach ***** that you can deflate?

If you really want to block off sound from the rear, you will need a partition that goes from floor to roof - just a regular cargo partition will not do it. I've also read on here previously that a lot of noise comes through the rear vertical partition. I forget who posted it, but he had done a lot to make a real impact on interior noise. You will have to search.

Personally, I don't buy that just because there is a big area back there it will be noisy. I used to run a Fox Mustang hatchback - a big open area back there also, but the C5 noise level is significantly higher.

Big tires + wheelwells that you're sitting very close to make a big difference in perception of road noise.

Come for a ride in the rear seats of our "family" car - 18" rims. big, low profile tires, yet almost no tire noise makes in into the cabin. You are just as close if not closer to the rear tires as in a C5. It really is a matter of the manufacturer deciding to take sound insulation seriously. Trouble is, it adds weight.

I did the Vettenuts premium insulation kit, and it did a decent job of reducing noise.

I did something similar in preparation for a stereo. The carpet in the rear comes out easier than I thought it would. I placed squares of thinner 50 mil (to save weight) butyl sound deadening mat strategically in the back and behind the seats covering about 50%. Then I covered the cargo area almost completely with neoprene insulation (this stuff is really light weight). The back wall and fenders are where most of the noise was coming from. There was noise coming from the storage areas too so I stuck a sub woofer in the center one and tools in the sine ones. You cant get much insulation in the storage cubby holes or the carpet wont fit right.

I ordered 48sqft of 50mil butyl/aluminum sheeting.

I am currently building a 1/2 height divider, 12" high, it is level with the top of the tub with the hatch open, Im incorporating a cargo/storage unit into the divider.

Depending how that goes, I will order some neoprene.

Try Blockit. Helps with tire noise in seconds.

Precut. Infused 4 layered mats that lay in and help with tire, road and some exhaust noise. Check it out here

The mat looks very polished in the rear cargo area so I don't think that I will add an aftermarket cargo mat on top of it.

While commuting to work this morning on the freeway I really did notice a difference. I did not have to crank the radio way up and the voices and music were much clearer.

If you are looking for a real easy sound insulation solution I would recommend this product.

First drive to work this morning and I can tell you it makes a big difference. Those that say it doesn't must have some really frickn' loud exhausts.
It took the resonance away that the road puts through the rear hatch area (hatch floor, plastic) and the road noise from the tires is probably cut in half.
There's also a noticeable "quietness" inside the rear now that I never had before. I always had that "white noise" behind my head from all the noises coming from the rear hatch area. Now it sounds like the entire car is quieter.
It made such a difference I am no longer worried about putting dynamat or peel and seal in my car. I will however still do the peel and seal on the floor boards under the car because now that the rear is so much quiter I hear road noise from under the car... lol.

Overall, it's a great buy and I'm glad I bought mine!!

Not the kind that requires you to remove the carpet or anything. Just put two pads behind the seats and one pad in you truck, or cargo area for a coupe. I drove my car at 70+ MPH for a good ways last night and WOW!!! Much smoother and peacefull sound. The stereo sounded better and the car just seems so much quieter in the cab area. I have had a C6 coupe and now have a C6 vert, and I promise you, this thing works! Just wanted to shout out a nice mod.

Even with flaps closed, the drone was very annoying below 1,950. Most of my cruising is between 1,700 and 1,950 rpms in 6th gear with 4.10 gears. With the blockit installed, the drone is gone at these rpms with flaps closed. Not just reduced, but gone. Below 1,700 drone is reduced to a bearable level.

With muffler flaps open the drone is reduced with the kit, but still louder than my comfort level. But it's a moot point now.

I was exhausted after driving it for 3-4 hours. The '15 Z06 was significantly quieter and rides more smoothly....think Chevy vehicle engineers softened the suspension bushings. Seems to be well known that the '15 is a quieter car. Just can't believe how such a relatively inexpensive and easily installed kit can be so effective. I could now drive the car across country....yes, it's that good.

So bottom line: I'd recommend(your hearing my vary) .
I can't say it's equal to the kits that require full interior dis-assembly since I didn't do that, but I definitely feel there is value in the product. If you are in Southern Calif and want to try in your car, come by and we'll throw it in and you can hear for yourself. Or just take my car for a test drive.

Super easy install - drop in and forget it. I have a coupe.
Big rear mat had the slits for rings.
Put my Stingray logo rear carpet on top of the mat and also put the mats behind the seats.
I can tell a difference in noise ; can hear the radio better and believe a long cruise will be far more pleasant.

Full agreement re above (and below)

Pics look good. I've thought of making my own, too. Interesting design with the angled back. Is this a drop in design, or are you securing it somehow?

What are you doing for finish? Carpet? Matching to factory? Other?

I decided on the laid back angle to match the angle of the backing behind the seats.
I have no plans to secure it, it is removable, it is shape fitted to the wheel wells so it cant really go anywhere side to side, and once its carpeted (im using black subwoofer carpet) it will be a fairly tight fit.
I added the two small pieces at the back to stop it from potentially flipping backwards.

I have driven with it in the car as is, and even though I dont drive on the limit, I am known to not slow down for corners. and it didnt move at all.

My motivation behind building this was purely costs. while Im not poor, I like making my own stuff when I can save.
I was thinking about buying a divider that I had seen, and a cargo organizer, but together they were almost $250.
My unit once completed will be approx $40 and will be one unit rather than two separate pieces.
1/2" MDF 4' x 2' $10
8' x 4' Black speaker carpet $17.99
Spray Adhesive $9.99
Plus a few screws and wood glue I had in my garage..
