Wow, can't believe the C7 didn't come with the auto shut. My 07 Z' didn't have it and it was a pain in the ***. That thing never closed. My '09 Z has it and it I love it.
Trust me, even though you think you are slamming it shut, 9 times out of 10 it won't close properly. My crystal ball tells me that the 2015 model is coming with the auto shut.....
This is same thing I noticed. But you can close the trunk then just push down on it to latch it shut. It's so light that slamming it with normal force is not enough
Here is the video I made today on how to shut the Deck Lid... In no way shape or form do you "SLAM" the deck lid..... Watch and if there is anything I can help with follow me on facebook and twitter and I will be more than happy to help! Take care, Mike
Great video! Subscribed.
Found the reference to the "memory metal" used to open a vent - not the latch which some treads mentioned: "The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will feature General Motors’ first production application of a shape-memory alloy (SMA)—a wire used to open and close the vent hatch that releases air from the car’s trunk area. The SMA wire, developed in-house by GM materials experts, replaces a motorized actuator and reduces component mass by approximately 1.1 lb (0.5 kg). GM vehicle engineers said use of the wire enables the trunk lid to close more easily than on the previous Corvette, where trapped air could make the lid harder to close."
wonder what happens to the vent when you leave the hatch open for a extended time period? Writeup says that electric current is applied to the wire to open the vent hatch when lid is opened. When lid is closed the current shuts off. Guess current is shut off when timer activates as with lights. Just have to learn to use it the "new" way.
Closing the hatch with your palm is not a good idea. Even if you just drive the car around block, the car has dust on it. Closing the hatch with your palm is just grinding those dust particles into your paint. And GM did this to save 1.1lbs...WOW.
Same issue here. I thought it would be easier to close with the new technology they supposedly used with metal taking on different properties when electric current is applied. It's good with the windows open, but when they are closed, you really have to slam it, to close it.
Another bug to get worked out.
Why not just crack the door when shutting it. This goes to prove that the car is built water tight. That is a good thing, no rain or wind noise!
You guys are ridiculous sometimes.... bitching because GM didn't put auto-shut on the hatch? It's a freaking trunk hatch... it's not hat hard as the video showed. As a long-time C5 owner where the vent wasn't that great it was simple to just close your door after closing the trunk.
As for the guy who said the windows should crack whenever the hatch is open... what if I'm coming up to my car in the rain? What if my car is wet and I want to put something in the back? You want the side windows to crack and let water in?

I don't drive any my Corvettes to the grocery store when it's raining. I have a DD for that mundane task.

It is a great thing that it is water tight, however, this is not how the car was engineered, and that is not what we are paying for, a band-aid solution to the real problem. I would think GM would want to fix whatever the issue is.

The "memory metal" is for the vent that opens & closes with the doors and trunk to allow air out - it's not part of the trunk mechanism itself.
I personally don't think anything is wrong with the trunk. you just have to shut it with force or push down on it if it you didnt shut it hard enough...??? Are we going to start complaining that something is wrong with the door if we don't slam it hard enough and it doesnt shut all the way? Different cars require different force to close doors/trunks etc. Come on guys.
You better get a new crystal ball. It won't have it. It's by design.

These are the kinds of things that makes buying a first year model risky. A 65k car that has problems shutting the trunk. Or we have to open our door or crack the windows....come on.
I have never had a motorized trunk. For those who have had them, are they usually quality motors?
From: Calgary, AB. There's a reason why white was the only color offered on every year Corvette. Proud Canadian German Jamaican!

People amazed that the C7 doesn't have auto shut ......be thankful, it's just another mechanical piece that is totally unnecessary that can go wrong. If you can't close a trunk or hatch then maybe you should be driving a motorcycle or truck with a welded shut gate.

Had it on my 08 and 11....never once a problem. What is unnecessary, is slamming the truck multiple times to get it to latch.
