Had a problem with new C8 yesterday with only 495 miles and six weeks old. Car started hesitating after pulling out of parking lot and would barely accelerate and was not running smoothly and stalled at light. It did start up again thankfully. Check engine light came on and luckily was close to home. There was a burning smell too and side fans ran a few minutes. Had to have car towed to Dealer and waiting for their report. Am not feeling very favorable and wish I’d waited a year. I’ve had several Vettes on major body change years and never had anything like this happen. Anyone experience anything similar?
Yes...that sounds like a valve spring failure. If it is, the good news is that GM will replace all 16 valve springs and scope the cylinder in question. In the rare case where there is further damage they have even replaced a handful of engines, all under full warranty of course. Their spring supplier sent them an unknown quantity of bad valve springs. So far, I don't believe there have been any cars over approximately 1300 miles that have experienced this failure. This could easily happen to any model year, but sorry that it happened to your car.
Good luck for a quick repair that gets you up and running. I had it happen to mine, and you'll always hear from nay sayers, but once mine was repaired it's been nothing but smiles owning this amazing car.
Thanks for your response and your reassuring words. I loved the car before yesterday as she is stunning and very aggressive looking and with the exterior and interior, they did a great job. This engine issue has me concerned that "Eleanor" will be a sickly child. Hope it's a simple fix and one I don't have to wait too long for as I waited 14 months for her to show up and I'm fresh out of patience. Thanks again.
Pretty much sounds like exactly what happened to me at 63 miles. Valve Spring, good news is, that its a known problem and they should be able to get the new version spring in and installed pretty fast. Since mine were done, the car has performed flawlessly. Keep the faith, it will all be fine. Get a fee oil change tossed in.
63 miles?Poor you! Well, now I don't feel so bad. Glad I decided to post the issue as it helps hearing others have had same issue. It was pretty scary being in traffic and then at a light, stalling and not knowing if car would start back up with no where to pull over in rush hour. Thanks for your reassuring reply, I'm starting to feel better.
That probably saved you, being in slow moving traffic. Pop a valve spring at low speed uggh not great. Pop it high speed, probably looking at a motor swap. Big pain in the ***. Mine broke at idle in my garage.. Welcome to the New VS club. Going to be fine though, few days on life support. It will perk back up to full strength. By the way, car gets great mileage when parked for service.
Thanks, good to know. What concerns me is the Onstar Diagnostic message I received stating that "An issue with the Engine and Transmission System has been detected. Did you get that message too?
Yes I did, the systems are so integrated, that the misfire codes send a cascade of faults. No big deal, they will clear and reset everything at the dealer.
After the mechanics get the springs all replaced, they dealer Nerdy tech plugs his Nerdy communicator in, the car and Nerd speak Nerd for a few, Then, it will all be good.
I heard from dealer late this afternoon and it was a valve spring issue and they are replacing all of them. It's going to take awhile to order and repair but all should be good. Thanks for advice and thank God for all Nerds everywhere!

What’s your VIN? Interested to see if it falls within the currently identified VIN range.
If there is a better place to post this, let me know.
What is this worth on the full retail market ?
Coming to a dealer auction near me this next week is a 2016 Z06 3LZ, automatic, with 20,000 miles. The condition is very good to excellent. Michelins are 6/32". It may have been leased originally.

Vin is 10459 which I no see has the valve problem and built within the time period the service bulletin states. The service bulletin was released September 30th with a list of VIN numbers and I picked mine up on 28th. Why wasn’t I contacted to have car inspected and valves replaced BEFORE it was a problem? There should have been a recall and I was assured by my dealer that they checked for recalls before delivering the vehicle. Where was Quality Control? They knew that cars built within a certain time frame with certain VIN numbers could potentially have these faulty valves, yet they did nothing? This is not acceptable!

There's no visual or otherwise pre-inspection that's going to show that your car actually has a valve spring problem. Sorry, it's just the nature of the beast. The failure affects such a small amount of C8s that it's just not feasible to replace them, just in case. Anyway, I wouldn't want dealer mechanics tearing into my car if it's not really warranted. That may open up an entirely separate can of worms. I do understand that your lack of mechanical knowledge prompted your response which is entirely understandable.
Valve spring problem yesterday. Car #3688, 895 miles. Rough running, check engine light, "service ESC" and "service Traction Control" messages, limped home, when turned off, burning smell and side fan ran for long time.

Well that is a game changer. almost 3000 less vin numbers than the original issue was deemed to be
Unfortunately it appears that GM simply doesn't yet know the extent of the problem. Hopefully we will soon be able to put this potential problem in the rear view mirror, when more clarity emerges regarding affected build dates and VINs.
