There's a far more rational explanation here. The Corvette team may still be tweaking the color and floating trial balloons to assess customer reaction. Per JVP's discussion with an unnamed GM official, it appears they have locked in on something similar to Mazda "Soul Red."
Mazda has tweaked that color over the years and the Soul Red on my 2019 MX-5 is darker and more pearlescent than earlier "Soul Reds" on CX and other models.
Color variations on the same named color are common. My wife dinged the front fender of an Infiniti a few years back, and it was what they called Titanium Silver Metallic. The body shop had color card spray-outs of 40+ different shades of that color name on various Infinitis. It took them several days to find the right shade, but they eventually nailed it.
I suspect this new color will eventually phase out torch red.
I doubt it. Torch red has been a standard color for years and very popular. This will the upcharge color. Probably gone after 3 years when some newer flavor of red comes available.

And people nearly rioted.... when they came out with Precision Red for 2005 it didn't even last the entire model year. They switched to Victory Red as quickly as they could and then came to their senses and brought Torch back in 2010.

That's correct, and it's not a process they wish to relive. They heard the message loud and clear: the Corvette community, for some odd reason, really loves that "orange faking it as a red" color called Torch Red. The likelihood of it ever being replaced by this new Red Mist is basically 0.

Yes, I never understood this. I remember Precision Red as being a much more true red and Victory being more orange. Torch still leans orange. As far as Corvette reds go, I thought Precision was best, but then again, I'm rarely in synch with the majority of Corvette owner preferences.

I agree with @Foosh asssment that this may be a trial ballon for GM. GM will introduce this color and will monitor sales of both torch red and this new color. I believe this new color, if introduced, will eat away at torch red sales more so than any other color. If this is true and this color becomes very popular I think GM will have no other choice than to phase out torch red. It's been around for 10 years.

Precision red was dark... blood red IMO. Victory Red was a nice "red red". Torch is great. I still see it as red, but very bright red w/o casting orange. Put it next to an orange car and it's very clearly red.
It's been around a lot longer than a decade. It just took a breather between '05 and '10. There's a reason GM keeps it as a choice. It's in the top three ordered, just about every year.
That's why I like Precision best of the 3 reds. It reminds me of BMW Imola Red, which was probably my favorite non-metallic red ever.
On another subject, I think a lot of people still like non-metallic colors. I really like the non-metallic Lava Orange on my 718 a bit more than I liked Sebring Orange tint coat on my C7. However, it is a close call. That would be a good reason to keep a non-metallic red around.

Torch Red has too much much orange in it for my tastes. It looks great on the C8, but not having been a Chevy owner, I was surprised when I got my C8 that it almost looked orange in sunlight. I ended up wrapping it in Avery Carmine Red which is a purer red. Torch Red targa top against Avery Red.

Di you think that criticizing someone's personal preference is making you look smart and/or classy? Do you not have something else to do with your time?
Huge improvement of LBR which was dull and lifeless
Your entitled to your opinion. I have had my LBR for almost 4 months. 99% of those who see it comment on how much they like the color.
If the new red was available in 2020 I would have given it some consideration. I had a C6 in Mag Red I loved it. The new red is somewhat similar.
I have had my LBR for almost 5 years and I have had many people tell me how nice the color is, had a guy stop and talk to me yesterday about how he liked the color. I would buy the color again.

You mis-understood my post. I too, am tired of folks 'dissing' others for their taste, be it, NB sneakers, chrome wheels, or color choices. Some folks like Zeus Bronze, some hate it, however, the person writing the check has the final say, whether everyone likes it or not.
