Well, not really. We have an Alfa Romeo Giulia in that color, and "Competizione Rosso" is a very different color from the "Soul Red" on our MX-5. When it and the MX-5 are side-by-side it's not even close. Also the Alfa red is far less metallic and pearlescent.
I don't have a photo right now of the two of them together, but will shoot one if I can find the time later today. It does look close in your photo.

I would love to see it - I've never seen them side by side - Neighbor has a Giulia in Competizione Rosso and they look close, pretty damned close.

OK, just shot these side-by-side on a cloudy day, and have to eat my words a bit. They do look close in these photos. In person, they look very different on a sunny day, and under garage lights. The pearlescent nature of the MX-5 paint makes it chameleon-like. I think the base coats are similar.
It always amazes me how different lighting conditions play tricks on cameras, and how different tint coat and 3-stage paints, which the MX-5 is, change colors.
After a Poster late yesterday, who is at Event Code 3000, was supposedly told by the Corvette Concierge his car may not be able to be produced as a 2020, I was concerned again about my current LBR on order! Feeling better the new "Red Mist" may be a nice darker red color, but thought I'd mention something I haven't seen said on this thread! IT'S MUCH MORE THAN PAINT COLOR!
Pics below shows some of my experience with car paint.
Painted my 1st car myself, Pep Boys primer! Spent money on performance, stuffing a bored Olds engine in my '41 Ford Coupe in 1959- not paint!
My 1st new Car was a '67 Corvair, I modified, that had a muddy OEM color I picked from a paint chip. Had it painted in a low cost paint shop also from a color chip - never again! Looked even more "Safety Vest" Orange than the pic (which is not my car) so had to have it repainted Silver!
My Street Rod is 20 years old and still wins trophies with it's Silver Flames on Silver paint job.
But there is a shop in town who paints "Best of Show Winners" for cars up and down the East Cost and the minimum cost is ~$20,000. Heck they had a car at a local show that the changing color paint itself cost over $10,000. The prep work to get that type of quality is lots of block sanding the body, as well as the primer, the color coats, the clear coats and a final color sand. It does not come Cheap.
All are hoping if GM "just pics the right paint color that will be the answer." Hmm on composite versus metal panels not so easy nor will (can) GM spend the money to make a top notch paint job on a Corvette.

Thanks for this, Mazda ripped it but also perfected it. McLaren liked what they saw as well lol
If Red Mist really is what we're hoping it is, the C8 will be my first Red car.

Whew. Glad I didn't waste my time scrolling through this idiotic debate without having to see your "street rod" show up...
These 2 colors are closely aligned. Doesn't make sense GM would offer 2 competing colors.
There not really "competing" colors. While I think a Torch Red Vette is beautiful, I really had no interest in being just another red Corvette. I find the darker reds to be more attractive. IOW, the new red would not be a conquest sale from TR. And I believe most who are inclined to one of the red hues would probably not want the other. TR will be the volume color for sure. It is not going anywhere.
Yes, I never understood this. I remember Precision Red as being a much more true red and Victory being more orange. Torch still leans orange. As far as Corvette reds go, I thought Precision was best, but then again, I'm rarely in synch with the majority of Corvette owner preferences.

On another subject, I think a lot of people still like non-metallic colors. I really like the non-metallic Lava Orange on my 718 a bit more than I liked Sebring Orange tint coat on my C7. However, it is a close call. That would be a good reason to keep a non-metallic red around.
I had an early ‘05 C6 (VIN #1176) and as I remember it there were 1304 Coupes and 30 Verts made in PR before switching to Victory Red that year. I liked it but in looking back VR was a nice replacement for PR. Below the definitive comparison to Reds of that time, top pic courtesy of Kerbecks. Enjoy.
EDIT: And I think the above ^^^^^ Red Mist will beat them all!

I read on the the Interweb somewhere, so it has to be true, that back in the day ice cream makers were making a fortune selling vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Well, one bright chap just got back graduating from one of those fancy Ivy League universities with a degree in business and wondered what could ice cream makers do to sell more ice cream. He thought that if ice cream makers could just introduce a new flavor their business would sky rocket. So ice cream makers all agreed and they came up with idea of introducing French Vanilla ice cream to the market. Turns out introducing this new delicious flavored ice cream wound up being a big hit with the public which was great. The down side however was that old vanilla ice cream experienced a big bit on sales and the introduction of the new flavor had no effect on chocolate sales.
But, they did sell more ice cream by leaving plain vanilla in the mix.
Moral is, sure the new red may poach some TR sales, but I doubt it will be enough to cause a cancellation because many will still prefer it. As I said above, a lot of folks still like non-metallic paint. Non-metallics are also a lot easier to match in a repair. In short, an "orangish" red has proven to be incredibly popular on Corvettes for decades and will continue to be so.

I don't disagree with your arguments you make about color. All I know is there is a finite number of people who eat ice cream.
