2020 15k miles
It only whines between 50 and 60 when not applying gas. Bothered me 1st week.
Don't notice it anymore. Get over it. You guys whine more than the car🤣

Mine whines at steady state in the 65-70 mph range .... so almost all the time on roads in my area. If it only did it during de-cel in the 50-60 range, I could live with that. Paid big $ for it & expected better.
The ring gear and pinion gear must mesh perfectly. If not, either the gear toe or heel makes contact alone, causing the whine. The way to check alignment is to smear heavy grease on the two gears and slowly rotate them. You are looking for a pattern where the grease is compressed only in the middle of the gear faces. It's easy to see if there is more toe or heel contact. It is adjusted by inserting/removing shims. Continued operation with a misaligned ring and pinion will cause failure of one or both. Once properly shimmed the whine will disappear.
In the old days you could do this yourself with Chevy 'pumpkin' rear ends. That's not true today. This is a job for the dealer and the sooner you get it repaired the better. Do not continue to operate the vehicle.
Hi Ray, I rebuilt a third member in a chevy hotrod years ago and did exactly that - it's why the whine bugs me so much because it shouldn't be a sign of what's normal.

Yeah, some of us learned these things at an early age when it was fun to do your own repairs. I had a HEMI Roadrunner and I used to get into the engine compartment to change plugs! You can't even see the plugs these days!
Good memories! I'd once bought a 57 300 C just to get the engine - sold it eventually to a friend who didn't add antifreeze and cracked the block. It all seemed so normal back when I was a teenager.

When I was a kid, if you couldn't work on your own car you were considered a wimp.
In the Army I was a tanker. We did all the work ourselves. In the rain, in the snow, in the mud. But my experience as a kid paid off.
hi -I was at a corvette meet yesterday and asked C8 owners whether they heard a whine - two said no and two said yes but it was faint. I'm taking it in to the dealer and will ask him about it - looking at all the threads I'd draw this conclusion:
1. given that this forum has thousands of viewers and only those with a noise problem respond - I'd guess the majority have quiet rear ends.
2. given that some are quick to live with it and some aren't (I don't want to live with it and don't see why I should), it suggests that there is a continuum of gear noise from loud to barely noticeable - so it isn't a yes/no question, it is a "how much" question
I'll let you know what the dealer says.

It's the lash with the ring and pinon. My service manager said they don't adjust them. They don't do anything. They pull them out, send them to Chevy, and install a replacement.
He said Chevy does not want the dealers working on them because none of the techs have been trained on the transmission.
Were they allowed to open them up, adjusting lash is rather straight forward.
Hi Ray, thanks for the update as that makes sense to me. I have an appointment in two weeks to take the car in for evaluation so all feedback such as yours is good to know.
I have a 2022 HCT with 7500 K on it now and my differential whines at most speeds including the common 45 mph zones I run through. It does it at highway speeds as well. I never had this issue with my C3 - C7 series of vettes so this is a bit irritating.
I mentioned it when I brought it in for the oil and filter changes and they added 1 qt to the transmission. It didn't quiet it down. They wouldn't look into it however as it was the Express Service section.
My whine is fairly noticeable unless the windows are down. Also mine is in a tight range; 74-76. It’s on float or barely foot on gas. It’s a bit annoying but for SURE not worth replacing the tranny, esp since it may exhibit the same. Since day 1, it has 2200 miles on it now.
I’ve started to notice some diff gear whine in my ‘22 HTC. 700 miles. There’s a noticeable whine in the 65-70 mph range, regardless of gear. So I’m wondering if others have noticed it and if you’ve addressed it with GM? I’m probably more interested in hearing from those that don’t have an issue since I’m anticipating the “they all do that “ response. The local service Mgr has driven mine and stated ‘he wouldn’t be happy if it was his car’ ... so I hope he will go to bat for me. I made a similar post on the ‘general’ forum but didn’t get much useful info. I hope this group is more helpful.
I went through about a three week process of them installing sound meters on my car (twice), readings sent to GM, service manager driving it and saying it was unaccpetable, then finally GM sending a Tremec engineer down to look at and drive my care. They finally agree to replace the transmission at a little over 12K miles. Nice and quiet now. Coincidentially mine was a 22 HTC as well.
Stick with it. They will do everything they can to convince you it is normal and its not. Back in the day we would be shimming the diff to fix this but somehow this is way more complicated now.

Your post was a good read and info on why some of our cars (like mine) whine but from a practical standpoint no owner will ever get that procedure done because dealers continue to say it’s normal.
A couple of days ago, I heard it briefly. As you guys said it's in that range ~70mph. I usually travel right below or right above that speed hence I don't hear it.
My new 2024 Z51 has noticeable gear whine. I had a ~400 mile drive home from the dealer and I started really noticing it toward the end of the trip, which was all back roads with varying speed and zero cruise control. My race mechanic friend who owns a 2023 and has worked on and tracked multiple C8s just rode in mine today and said it's not normal and this is the first C8 he's seen with this noise. He said it's loud enough for him to consider unacceptable in a new $80k car.
I'm going to just deal with it until the car hits 1500 miles. I assume if I took it in right now they'd just tell me it's normal to have noises during break in, which might end up being true.
Forgot to mention: mine usually starts around 40mph but sometimes as low as 35. It's worst at very light throttle when there's no exhaust noise to cover it up.
