Hi t,
The modern equivalent of the F70-15 tire originally on your 71 is a 215/70/15 tire which is about 26.9" tall.
The 235/60/15 tire will fit and not rub but is about 26.1" tall.
While being considerably wider than the original tire some people would notice it's shorter and doesn't quite fill the wheel-well like the original height tire did.
It takes the 255/60/15 to get the equivalent height and that tire is considerably wider so can rub on some cars under certain conditions.
Regards,
Alan

Alan,
I just checked my tires and I have 225/70R/15 BFG.
I checked one tire that is off right now with level and tape
that is not on the 73 and it was 27". One on the 73 measured
26.5". Is this what you would expect?
This is how they look:

Hi Donnie,
I would expect the 225-70 to measure about 27.4"
This generally means it's a little 'taller' and a little 'wider' than the original F70.
This is why many people who don't want the 'fat tire' look really like the 225-70 tire. It does a good job of filling the wheel-well opening.
I like the look of the tires on your car…. they're some-what old school looking but do a much better job of filling the wheel well than the original F70's size tires do.
Even back in 1972 when I replaced my original tires I went up one size to a G70 tire for that reason. They're still in my basement.
Regards,
Alan

I put 235/70/15 Cooper Cobra's on my 75 this winter. I took it to get a 4 wheel alignment today and everything is good to go. My new Coopers measure 27.9" tall with 30 psi and handle much much better than the 245/60/15 TA Radials I took off. I can't see why they wouldn't work for you also.

235 60r 15 on 8 inch wide rims, no rubs, seems to sit nicely in the wheel well. Speedometer is about 2-3 mph slow at 30-40 mph

Hi thel1,
The 235-70 is a little more than 1" taller than the original F70 tire.
This would make ME a bit nervous if I drove the car a lot.
Going up from the street to a driveway transition with the wheels turned might take it's toll on the fender arch.
The 235-70 might get you in trouble because of both it's height and width increase.
I like fat tires as much as anyone but I think you need to be cautious, and also look at the car's appearance with a critical eye.

Alan

Here is a picture of my 75 with the 235/70R15 Coopers on it. I am not sure if there is a difference in clearances between 71 and 75 but there and more qualified people on the forum to answer that question. I like the stance and character of the taller tire and didn't have and rubbing on the 50 or so miles since I got it out this Spring. My 75 came equipped with G70R/15 when new so there is only about 1/2 inch difference in diameter from what I have now. Good luck with your ride, the season is upon us.

I like the looks of a bigger tire than stock but too big and it takes away from the looks and for that reason I'm running P225/70R15 RWL tires . Remember going bigger also changes your speedometer calculations too.

The 235R15-60 tires are nearly perfect for an early C3. They will not rub in front. Anything wider could rub.
