The pistons show no sign of banging on a foreign object.

The piston tops? Right out the exhaust.

Default Latest Updates

From MsVetteMan:

Here's the latest. Motor is now fully assembled and ready for shipment back to blueprint/Marshall engines for their warranty inspection. I put it back together tonight in about 4 hours!! Not bad for a rookie.

Upon closer inspection of the #6 piston, the upper thin grooved area on the side wall (ring land area) has severe pitting or lodging of what looks like could be part of the piston top crammed into the grooves.

What size were the dang pistons???? I've seen it posted the bores were about 4.040" ... What size was STAMPED into those KB pistons? ... and ... What size did they measure? ... I recall this was supposedly a new 355" inch motor ... so it should've had about 4.030" bores and pistons. Thirty-over 350 is 355" ... Forty-over is 357".

From MsVetteMan:

In reply to Jackson: All dimensions are in a previous post less than 3 or so pages back. Basically the cylinders measure 4.041 on average and with an average clearance of ..003. So, that would make the pistons size be 4.038, or 40 over pistons. That's the way I understand it.

the top ring land is not the widest part of the piston (in fact it's about the narrowest) because the piston is barrel shaped , if it jammed in the bore you would have seen it jam on the skirts. However, it COULD jam if there was debris between the bore and the ring land...that would explain the verical scoring marks in the bores. It's hard to see those spots in the pics, any chance we can get a crisper pic?

Just a thought.
The bores are 40 over. Are the pistons only 30 over?
Wonder what would happen with a 30 over piston in a 40 over bore, but with correctly gapped rings?

Bubba told me that he has had piston damage like this on his boat engines when the cooling water on the exhaust screwed up and backed into the engine.

Default ? Size STAMP ?

Thoughout an owner inspection and subsequent one (if not two) local inspections ... has anyone looked at the pistons themselves for a size-stamp? ... what size is STAMP? ... & determined if pistons are STAMPED +30, +40 etc? ... and also compared that to pistons' skirt diameter? I had read earlier average bore was about 4.040" (4.041") and average clearance 0.003". But what say the pistons themselves? I can't be certain it'll be there, but I expect there's a factory-applied size STAMP somewhere on piston ... first place I'd look is on crown ... next, near a pin boss.

On this piston, it's inked on the bottom of the piston and I believe it may also be on the pin boss....it's been a few weeks.

Were the pistons measured on the skirts ninety degrees from the pin?
What did it measure?
If I was trying to get a piston to break above the ring like these have, I would cut some grooves above the ring just like these have. What the heck are those for?
