I see this a different way...think that this motor was just tossed together in a high production facility...remember this..100 engines in how many days from their AD...??? So the cylinders are the key,as honing is a labor intensive process..and it seems corners were cut there...

How would it not be?? The first third party said it wasn't. What could he have done that made this motor grenade in such a nasty fashion. I agree with riwoods.

I wanna know who put those grooves in those pistons and why!
Why would anybody do that to a piston that was already brittle?

I confess, I did it. I cannot tell a lie. I put the grooves in the pistons...

Default Possible Cause

We've been building these type of units for over 40 years now. We've pretty much seen it all! I would go out on a limb here a say "that block got out the door WITHOUT a pressure test AND the unit was built with the cracked bores already in play". It would take a short period of time for both the compression AND the temperature to "open" the cracks. And if you're not paying attention carefully as it's running it would be easy to overlook and tough to spot being it was mostly internal. It may explain a few issues. First, why it all happened immediately, second, why the bores had to go +040" to straighten them out instead of the "usual" +030". There was probably some previous damage in place. In a facility that produces such a high number of units on a daily basis, I would be hard pressed to believe EVERY unit is magged and pressure tested. And even then it relies on someone's ability to "read" what they're seeing. It's called "human-error". This is all my own opinion! Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. We've sold a number of cores to people up here on these forums and I can tell you EVERY core that left here was both "magged" first, which I don't really trust on a block, and then pressure tested. It won't leave here unless I know it's an excellent core. I have dozen's of +060 blocks here that are going to be scrapped eventually, depending on the "numbers".

100 engines a day, 2600.00 per engine x 300 days, ( off on weekends and holidays) = 78 million a year Gross. If they have a half a brain, ide imagine they will give MSVETTEMAN, whatever engine he wants, and make sure its perfect before they send it to him. I know for certain thats what I would do if I was in buisness. You couldnt pay enough for that kind of advertising.

So is the motor on it's way back yet? Any new news from Blueprint?

What I've learned from this thread is this: I'm going to thing long and hard before buying KB Hypers for my upcoming rebuild.

From MsVetteMan:

I'm writing this from my jail cell and as I await my bond (I have served my 10 days), and had to stop and ponder for a moment.

1. I ordered a 355 motor (30 over) and received a 357 motor (40 over).

2. My order shipped from Goodman Auto Repair and I found another Bill of Lading with another customers name on it. It does however appear as though Goodman is just a 3rd party reseller, not a builder. Another piece of paperwork shows it shipped from Blueprint to them, then to me. ???

3. Tricky wording on the website led me to believe that my engine would actually be dynoed, not just checked to see if it met spec's of the "typical" dyno.

4. Engine was suppose to have been pressure tested and sonic tested before assembly. Wonder if it was. I asked for the sonic test report, and they would or could not produce one.

Other thoughts and ramblings: I think that Blueprint/Marshall engines will do the right thing. They have acted very responsible, timely, and professional so far.

Now comes the tuff decision. Accept another motor from them? Depending upon how this plays out, and after hearing their explanation as to why the engine failed, a may consider an "upgrade" replacement at no additional cost. I feel it's the least they can do for my time. I would also request that it actually be dynoed and a computer print out shipped with the motor, or I will refuse delivery.

Well boys, she's all crated up and ready for pickup (pic below). Good thing I hadn't thrown away all the crate material yet!! How weird, the truck driver just called me for directions to my place, and he's the same one that made the delivery to start with. Wow, talk about freaky. Wish me luck!! And maybe I will get out of jail today, so Jim can take a break from being my secretary!! Thanks Jim, for keeping the clones informed! It's out of my hands now!!

sheesh.. just finished reading from page 1 to 44...

my observations on the pics posted...old block, does not appear fresh hone. Agree with the assessment that the cracked block was assembled and shipped. Pistons appear used.

BTW, msvetteman will make his appearance shortly

Just my .02... I'd give them a chance to make good, otherwise you'll have to start from scratch with someone else. To get a sure fire "hand built" engine will be time consuming (you'll be at the back of the line). If you go for another crate, what's to say this won't happen again with another company???
