Having the cable too tight (delayed up shifts) IS BETTER than to loose (early, low rpm shifts) but you have a long ways before you get to adjusting tv cables

The extra few hundred look like a big difference in power on those heads. I wished they tried the eBay specials but that would hurt their ad supporters.

hmmm... I must have missed the post where you scored the heads... nice

black balancer looks good.... except how are you planning on seeing the timing line when the motor is in the car? a bit of silver in the slot goes a long way to helping you see the line

Ugh! This is the first I have heard about scoring the heads.
I am going to paint the timing line just haven't got to it yet.
Back to the heads, I scuffed the block surface, put sealer around the water jackets and put the heads on. I sure hope you aren't getting ready to tell me I have to pull them and get new gaskets! Ha!

Yuuup! Used it many times but I have done a lot of work with wood so I read that as if there was some "scoring pattern" or something that had to be done with the heads. Hahaha

So, what head gasket did you use? Whatever it is, it's the wrong one, and needs to be replaced! Just kidding! Sheesh! Seriously, though, what gasket did you end up using? And what did you use as a sealer? And, did you use anything to seal the head bolt threads? They go into the water jacket, ya know, and they need to be sealed. Did you by any chance flip the heads over before you installed them, and pour some solvent into the combustion chamber to make sure the valves sealed? Chances are they do, I wouldn't bother to take 'em off to check, but you should have done this before you put them on, just for peace of mind. I know, I know, hindsight is 20/20, isn't it?

You are approaching the part of the build where things get tricky......the valvetrain. Take your time, and look before you leap! Having the valvetrain and the distributor set up correctly is crucial to a smooth break-in upon initial start-up. Double and triple check everything! And, as always, don't be afraid to ask stupid questions. You may feel silly asking a dumb question, but think how silly you'd feel if you destroy your engine 5 minutes after you start it up, because you didn't ask! Good luck!

I used a felpro permatorque head gasket. I did seal the head bolts and they came with a sealer on them as we'll. I used RTV grey for everything which was the advice I got from Birdsmith. I am cleaning and getting ready for the next step. Go ahead and feel free to post the process for the valve train if you would like. That would help a lot.l
Would rather ask a dumb question and regret the stupidity later! Hahaha!
